A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL
Dear BMS Warriors, Staff, and Families:
Hello. I hope this newsletter finds you doing well. On Friday, May 13th, our PTO held a semi-formal dance for our 8th graders and it was a wonderful event! I wish to thank those parents and staff who planned, decorated, provided food, celebrated with our students, and cleaned up afterwards. A special thanks to the following:
Lizzie and Mike Verbel for donating our boneless Hooter’s wings
Karen Tiberio dance committee decorations and for the pizza
Misty Bonavita for the chips
Barbara Bowles for the drinks
Rebecca Meyers
Diane Williams
Jack Ellis and his crew of friends for decorating
Mr. Tony Fatiga for serving as our DJ
PTO Board - Angela Ellis, Melissa Floyd, Abrian Jacobs and Jen Alsop
Their hard work resulted in many smiles, laughter and fun had by all. It warmed my heart to see our students having fun while just being kids. Thanks again BMS PTO!
We have two weeks left in this school year. Device collections will take place this week (see more information below) with May 24th being the final day to turn in loaned computers and charging cords. Expedited retake SOLs will take place this week. A student is eligible to retake a SOL if they scored between a 375 and 399. After receiving remediation from their teacher, they have a second chance to pass the SOL. Good luck everyone!
I hope you have a great week!
Dr. Sheila Smith

TRANSPORTATION SURVEY FOR 2022-2023: All SCPS Families were provided a survey to collect student transportation needs for the 2022-2023 school year. Parents/Guardians will be asked to complete this survey in ParentVUE. This information will help us plan routing needs for next school year.
FINAL REPORT CARDS: All final report cards will be posted to Parentvue/StudentVue. There is a parent acknowledgement within ParentVue to download the final report card. If a family is in need of a paper copy, please reach out to our Counseling Secretary, Tammy Idol at tidol@spotsylvania.k12.va.us.
CHANCELLOR HIGH FOOTBALL: Any rising 9th graders who are attending Chancellor HS next year and are interested in playing football this fall, there will be a Parent/Player Meeting on Monday, May 16 at 7pm in the ChHS Library. The meeting will cover paperwork requirements, the summer workout schedule, team rules, and much more. All players and at least one parent are strongly encouraged to attend if at all possible. Summer Workout Schedule: Monday through Thursday, 7am to 9:30am, beginning May 30. Meet at the left side entrance to ChHS.
STUDENT DEVICE COLLECTION: With the exception of summer school students, we are required to collect all computers/devices and power cords from every student before they leave the building for the summer. Below is our plan. Please let me know if there are issues, questions, and/or concerns.
6th grade devices will be collected during Math classes on May 18th.
7th grade devices will be collected during Science classes on May 20th.
8th grade devices will be collected during History classes on May 19th.
Expedited Retakes will be taken during these three days of collection. Students who are eligible for a retake will retain their device until May 24th when devices will be collected at each grade level lunch. May 24th will be the final day to return devices.
ATTENTION RISING 9TH GRADERS GOING TO COURTLAND HIGH: The Courtland High School Marching Band is recruiting members for the band, but also those who do not play instruments, but still want to be involved. The Marching Band is hosting a Mini Band Camp for free! This opportunity is open to ALL RISING NINTH GRADERS. All rising ninth graders are invited, even if they are not planning on attending Courtland. While we advise them to reach out to their high school and talk to them, we will not turn them away! Any students who just want to try something new or currently are in chorus or orchestra and want to join the marching band, but do not play a marching instrument are extremely encouraged to come out! There is no cost associated and this is NOT a commitment to the band, but it is a good opportunity to see what marching band is like. The dates and times are as follows: May 18th-20th from 5pm-7pm. Our Band director is Eugene Mills --> emills@spotsylvania.k12.va.us. Our Guard Instructor is Christine Koolhof --> ckoolhof@spotsylvania.k12.va.us.
NO BUS PASSES: Schools are not permitted to provide bus passes for the remainder of this school year due to no room on buses. Our buses are having to conduct shared and doubled runs.
ATTENTION 8TH GRADERS AND THEIR PARENTS: In partnership with the BMS PTO, we will once again hold our annual 8th grade picnic and dance at the end of this school year to celebrate with our 8th graders their transition from middle to high school. The dance has been scheduled for Friday, May 13th from 6:30 until 9:00. The picnic/field day at Loreilla Park is scheduled for Monday, May 23. More details and planning to come. Students have been informed of the privilege to attend these events and that this privilege is contingent upon making good choices between March 22nd and May 20th. Please see the slides that will be shared with students. Administrators will make students and parents aware of the loss of any privilege(s) when discussing the consequence for any given referral.
