The Principal's Den
We have so much to celebrate and we were lucky to be able to highlight some great things on the day of our PRIDE Rally. Dr. Reid and the Communications department joined us for most of the day yesterday. We had the district media team here filming for KISD's "Let's Get Real" segment. They were with us during the PRIDE rally and then Dr. Reid interviewed me, Mrs. Cowen and our PRIDE winners, 1st grade teacher, Kelly Kaczmarski and one of our 4th graders Kynlea Cavett. Our focus in our interview was to share all the wonderful things that we are doing that help build a positive climate at SVES.
Dr. Reid also spent some time in 4th grade visiting with Mrs. Perkins, Mrs. Tate and 4th grader Alina Tomb. They shared a great Texas History activity where students had to pretend they were either a key figure or an eyewitness to a battle (such as the Battle of Gonzalez, Goliad or the Alamo). Students then had to take turns being the t.v. reporter to ask questions. They used a green screen in the background so that they could digitally place themselves on location. All interviews where then connected to a QRCode so the 4th grade families could see the videos on their personal devices during Open House.
Dr. Reid hosted the KISD Brown Bag Luncheon. Dr. Reid will be retiring in July of this year. He shared great information about the impact of school vouchers will have on public schools and the importance of all us reaching out to our local representatives so that all decisions made in Austin have a positive effect on all the students of KISD and the state of Texas. Take a moment to view the video below. There have been many misconceptions about our property taxes and where that money even goes! The most important voices that can be heard are YOURS. Contact your representative, ask questions, and share any concerns.

Safety Reminders
Please remember that when you enter our parking lot, you should not be driving more than 10 miles per hour even when there isn't a car line present. It is also a Texas state law that you cannot be on your cell phones while in a school zone. This includes when you are in the car line. Please be aware of all safety laws and help us all keep all visitors, our families, and students safe when walking, biking or driving to school.

String Orchestra to be Offered to 6th grade next year
We have exciting news! Orchestra will be offered at the New Middle School next school year! Current 5th grade students will have the option to chose Orchestra as their elective in the 6th grade. Other full year elective choices will be Art, Music, Theater, or Band. Beginning string orchestra provides the student with basic instruction in violin, viola, cello, and bass, as well as training in the proper care of stringed instruments, fundamentals of musicianship, and instrumental performance. No prior music experience is necessary.
Orchestra students may be required to purchase the appropriate instrument. Larger instruments, such as cellos and basses, are provided for classroom use. An annual $100 fee is charged for the use of school owned instruments.
