NEW!! Red Ribbon Week!
Happy Bullying Prevention Month! At Hawthorn, we celebrate Bullying Prevention Month during our Red Ribbon Week activities. This year’s Red Ribbon Theme is, “Keeping Our Paws Drug, Alcohol, and Bully Free.” October's counseling lessons focus on bullying prevention, drug and alcohol awareness, and keeping our bodies healthy. Students are learning that the best way to keep themselves safe from drugs and alcohol is to Ask First before eating or drinking anything that wasn't directly given to them from their safe adult. One lesson from each Specials class will focus on bullying prevention, drug and alcohol prevention, and/or safe and healthy choices.
Monday, October 28th
Drum for Drug Awareness, Pledge Banner Signing at lunch, and Wear Red Day -Drum club students will play at the front entrance as students arrive. Students and staff wear red and sign this year’s pledge banner to acknowledge a school wide stand against drugs, alcohol, and bullying. Students will receive Red Ribbon Bracelets to wear during the school week.
Tuesday, October 29th
Kindness Leaves Others Encouraged -Classrooms will write ways to be kind on leaf cut outs. We will display our leaves in the hallways and let those ideas inspire us to show random acts of kindness all week long.
Wednesday, October 30th
Stomp Out and Stand Against Drugs, Alcohol, and Bullying -Students and staff wear their favorite boots to Stomp Out and stand against drugs, alcohol, and bullying.
Thursday, October 31st
It Is No Sweat to Be a Friend To Someone -Wear sweats and make an extra effort to be kind to others.
Friday, November 1st
Team Up to Stand Against Drugs, Alcohol, and Bullying -Students and staff wear their favorite team’s shirt to “team up” and stand against drugs, alcohol, and bullying.

A Note From Our School Social Workers
Some families may be facing hardships due to the United Auto Workers' (UAW) strike against General Motors. If your families' employment is impacted by the strike, your family may be eligible for meal benefits. Please refer to our Parent Resources page here: https://www.parkhill.k12.mo.us/parent_resources/menus_and_nutrition if you would like to apply for free or reduced meals. Once the strike is finalized and employees are back to work, families can then notify food services of this change.
Please contact Ms. Cobb 816-359-5796 or Ms. Anderson 816-359-6379 for further resources and assistance.

Habit of the Month- Habit #1 Be Proactive
During the month of October, students will be learning about ways to be proactive. They will learn the importance of being responsible and choosing their actions, attitudes and moods. Proactive people do not blame others and do the right thing when no one is looking and without being asked. One of the biggest lessons for children is learning about the “pause” button that we all have. This refers to the time between the point when something happens (stimulus) and the time we take before responding. When your child is having a big reaction to something, encourage the habit of ’pausing’ and thinking about how best to respond.
