Knightly Update February 7, 2021
Edition Vol 9 Issue 26
So the groundhog saw his shadow. Well if six more weeks of winter looks like what we experienced this past week, I'll take it. I hope you had a nice week.
Our intent was to begin meeting with students from the Class of 2022 last week to review and discuss their course enrollment forms. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we were unable to hold these meetings and will begin these discussions this week. We will meet with incoming seniors and juniors this week, and with our incoming sophomores beginning February 16. Please ensure your student brings their signed course enrollment form to school with them daily so they are prepared to meet with us when they are called. The forms and "how-to" video for completing the form are included in this week's update for your review.
Changing from a week to a month in 1976, the United States observes Black History Month in February as a month-long celebration honoring the contributions made by Black Americans in our country. I recently read an article in Reader's Digest sharing why Black History Month shouldn't just be a single month and it really provoked some thought. As a school community, our work to celebrate what everyone brings to our campus should never be limited to a day, a week, a month, or a year. I am privileged to work at a school that is so diverse, and as a white man, I realize I still have much to learn and recognize about myself and others. I will continue to encourage our students and staff to engage in conversations, listen, hear, understand, celebrate, and encourage. While we set aside February to celebrate Black Americans and share the stories of contribution and significance of Black Americans with our students, we shouldn't stop learning, educating, questioning, and growing once the month concludes. And just maybe, our school community might contribute in a small way to some much-needed healing in a time of such divisiveness.
Respectfully,
Rob Bickes
Principal

Knights in the Spotlight
Each year, ACP-Erie has the honor of recognizing an outstanding parent volunteer, faculty or staff member, and student to be honored at the District Night of Recognition Ceremony. We are very pleased to announce that Mrs. Tracie Padilla will be recognized as our parent volunteer, Ms. Lucy Johnson will be recognized as our distinguished staff member, and junior Omina Nematova will be recognized as our outstanding student citizen. We had the pleasure of announcing these awards earlier this week to our staff and students. Congratulations to each of you and thank you for all you do for our school community. We are excited to see you receive your well-deserved District recognition (virtually, of course) later this semester. Congratulations!

Congratulations to senior Elizabeth Nakai for being recognized by ACP SportsHI as the Athlete of the Month for January 2021! She was nominated by Mr. Jagiello.
Elizabeth Nakai started racing mountain bikes in the 8th grade. At the time she had a friend at another school, and they had a high school mountain bike team. Elizabeth wanted a team for ACP and because of her, along with the assistance from her parents, we do. In 2017-2018, ACP had its first mountain bike team racing in the NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) series. ACP had nine riders, four at the high school level. This year ACP had 40 riders and while COVID forced the cancelation of the races the team still rode over 4,000 training miles collectively. Congratulations and thank you Elizabeth for your role in bringing mountain biking to our school.

The Global Health Leaders Conference at Johns Hopkins University
The Board of Directors of The Global Health Leaders Conference at Johns Hopkins University, would like to invite our students who are interested in global health and medicine to apply for our 2021 virtual conference.
The international conference is a Johns Hopkins University student and faculty-led program within the JHU Undergraduate Program in Public Health Studies. At the conference, students learn about issues in global health, public health, and medicine directly from world leaders in these fields, forge friendships and connections with like-minded exceptional students, and share their own work and ideas on global health-related topics by presenting in their student speaker series. Additionally, the conference is a unique opportunity for students to include in their future interviews, essays, applications, and resumes. The purpose of the program is to develop the next generation of leaders in global health, public health, and medicine.
Virtual conference programming (such as featured speaker presentations, student presentations, etc.) will be held throughout the spring/early summer of 2021. The fee for this year’s conference is still to be determined, but it will be no greater than $39 USD. If this fee places a significant financial burden on a student’s family, the Board asks the student to inform them upon their acceptance to the program, as they do not want the conference fee to be a barrier for any deserving student. There is no conference application fee.
Applications to their conference are available on their website (https://glohea.org) and will be accepted until February 28th, 2021. Admission into the program is competitive, so they highly encourage students to apply as early as possible.
Please do not hesitate to email ghlcjhu@glohea.org or visit their website https://glohea.org if you need any clarification or have any questions. We hope interested students will take advantage of this opportunity!
