SOS Strategy: The Question Is...
Materials: White board, sticky notes, writing utensils 1. Determine a ques/on related to the current unit of study and write only the answer to that ques/on on the board. 2.Ask students to write questions that could match the answer on sticky notes. Allow students to refer to notes or handouts, if necessary. 3. Have students stick their questions to the board, surrounding the answer. Alternatively, students could write the answer in their interactive notebooks and list questions under or around it.
This strategy is an effective means of formative assessment, allowing a teacher to see what the students understand about a given topic. It is also a good springboard for classroom discussion, if students are asked to justify the questions they are posting. Finally, it afford students an opportunity to practice formulating questions.
• Review details about a person, place, or thing.
• Look at a character or setting of a book the class has read.
• Practice number sense (write a number as the answer & students need to write equations to equal that number.)
• Summarize the “big idea” of a daily lesson topic.
ASIA-PACIFIC CHILDREN’S CONVENTION
ASIA-PACIFIC CHILDREN’S CONVENTION
As Georgia’s liaison office for the 31st Annual Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention (APCC), The Japan-America Society of Georgia (JASG) is again able to share a once in a lifetime opportunity with 4 ten/eleven-year-old students (two boys and two girls) and 1 chaperone from the state of Georgia through this fully funded exchange program to Fukuoka, Japan (Atlanta’s Sister City).
This year’s APCC program will be held from July 14-25, 2019. The JASG will again act as the official liaison office between the APCC, the City of Fukuoka, and Atlanta's APCC delegation, and will manage all participant selections and pre-departure preparations for this cultural exchange program. How can students participate as a Junior Ambassador?
The JASG requests that any student who meets the participation criteria and eligibility requirements submit an essay, no more than two pages (either handwritten or typed), on why they would make a good Junior Ambassador and representative of Georgia. The student should also submit a single drawing on an 8 ½” x 11” piece of white paper that represents the theme of the convention. In addition, the student should provide a CONFIDENTIAL letter of recommendation (meaning that the letter was written and placed in a sealed envelope before being given to the student for submission) from the student’s teacher or another adult who is not the student’s parent and/or guardian. Lastly, the student should complete and submit an application form, which is available on the APCC page of the JASG’s website atwww.JASGeorgia.org/APCC.
The deadline for submission is Tuesday, February 5, 2019. Any applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
