WM 4th Grade Curriculum Update

Reading and Writing
Reading
Students will engage in a variety of close reading opportunities as we review fiction and nonfiction reading skills in preparation for Wisconsin’s Forward Exam.
Writing
Students will be reviewing fiction and nonfiction writing features with continued skills practice.
4th Grade Math
Finishing Unit 5
Starting Unit 6: Multiplication & Division, Data & Fractions
Multiply multi-digit numbers
Divide a multi-digit number by a 1-digit number
Solve problems about the area & perimeter of rectangles
Review equivalent fractions, and add & subtract fractions and mixed numbers
5th Grade Math
Finishing Unit 5
Starting Unit 6: Graphing, Geometry, and Volume
Calculate the volume of a rectangular prism using a formula and other strategies
Graph points in the coordinate plane
Sort and classify triangles, quadrilaterals, and other two-dimensional shapes
Multiply a mixed number by a whole number & by another mixed number.
Science
Throughout the school year 4th graders will study:
- Environments: organisms and how they interact with their ecosystems
- Energy: circuits, magnetism, and how energy transfers (This is our current unit)
- Rocks, Soil, and Landforms: weathering, landforms, and mapping Earth’s surface
Social Studies
Students will be studying Wisconsin’s pioneers and early industries that brought them here: mining, farming and logging.
LMC - Library
Fourth graders will be looking more closely at the library catalog (Destiny) as we learn to search for books online and then find them on the shelves.
Music
Mrs. Spahn’s classes will be working on: Finishing up the Blues, including the 12-bar Blues Progression.
Ms. Soltis’ classes will be working on: Reading notes on the staff! Students will learn the names of the lines and spaces (we learned about this a little bit in 3rd grade), and this knowledge will help us get ready for our recorder & ukulele units!
Technology
Students will begin to use spreadsheet tools to represent and analyze data. Students will continue to strengthen their typing speed and words per minute.
Art
How do artists use value to create the illusion of depth? How do artists bring dreams to life? (Form Stacks)
PE
We just finished up with our basketball unit and students enjoyed participating in our Hoops for Heart event days, that took place on Feb. 28 and March 1. Thank you to all who helped fundraise for this event and for supporting The American Heart Association! All donations must be made online or turned into Mrs. Johnson by Fri. March 15, thank you!
The month of March is filled with some awesome units. We will be training for the Ninja Warrior! Students will explore different fitness activities through fitness stations and games. By the end of the month, they will be ready to compete in our WM Ninja Warrior course.
