Who Should Attend?
Special educators who assist in student life after high school.
About this Round Table Workshop:
Lori will describe her experience in building a program for adolescents with special education needs who are transitioning to adulthood. The program, called Goal Oriented Student Transition Program (GOST), located at Spaulding High School, has three major components: Vocational Experience, Civic/Community Activities and Recreation Therapy. Program activities may include, based on student goals: unpaid work experiences and internships, pre-vocational and vocational skill building, activities to support daily community living, and recreational activities. Community agencies, families and businesses are involved in planning for a smooth
transition.
This Round Table professional learning activity will include descriptions of: program startup; costs; writing of related IEP goals; connecting with outside agencies; admissions and graduation; core program beliefs, and developing activities to support those beliefs; data/reports and self assessment; looking to the future.
Learner Outcomes:
As a result of attending, Participants will learn to:
- Be familiar with the GOST model and its transition components;
- Understand how the GOST model can provide a base for developing a transition program in their school;
- Have an opportunity to work on ideas for their home school that can begin the development of an effective transition plan or plan revision.
Schedule:

9:00 – 9:15 Getting to know who is at the table and a bit about their district.
9:15-9:45 Sharing the big picture of our program and how it is structured
9:45-10:00 Break
10:00 – 10:45 Getting into the details
10:45-11:45 Working in pairs to start on their own plans for their programs by following outline of questions/topics provided
11:45-12:00 Questions/follow ups if needed
About the Round Table Leader
Lori Gay has held positions in Special Education in the Rochester School Department for many years, beginning as a special education paraprofessional, then moving to extended school program and volunteer coordinator for the Farmington and Rochester School department. In this position, she set up after school programs and mentorships with business professionals to support young teens, and managed volunteer services for 12 schools. Returning solely to the Rochester School Department, she has served as a middle and high school special educator and now Special Education Coordinator at Spaulding High School. Over the seven years as Coordinator, Lori has been involved in curriculum changes approaches to transition and development of the Goal Oriented Student Transition (GOST) program.

Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance for up to 3 contact hours.
