Science Rules!

Wow-Christmas ALREADY?

I cannot believe we are about to mark the end of the first semester and head off to our Christmas Break. Students have been working extremely hard this month learning about earth science. We started out reviewing rapid changes from 3rd grade, slow changes from 4th grade, and adding in landforms made by weathering, erosion, and deposition. We are moving on to sedimentary rock formation and fossils this week. When we return from the break, we will hit what I like to call the LONG HAUL-the few months between the new year and the STAAR test. During this time, I will push your students learning to the max! We will cram in the rest of earth science, life science, and a fast paced STAAR review. Tutorials for science will be from April 4-May 4, and students will be notified if they need to attend. Hold on tight, it's about to get CRAZY busy!

SCIENCE QUIZ-Thursday, December 17, 2015

What can I do for my child?

Many parents ask me, "What can I do to help my child be successful in science?" Here are several tried and true ways you can help your child be a success in my class:

  • Ask, "What did you learn today in science? Tell me all about it!"
  • Have students do their homework with FULL STARATEGIES and then discuss it and check it for them.
  • Encourage students to bring home their journal every day and read over the new notes one or two times.
  • Allow your child to play on the SYMBALOO pages as an interactive review.
  • Down load and require your child to play the STAAR review APP called Ready Set STAAR. You can see a sample of the APP here:

Did I mention, "I LOVE SYMBALOO!"?

For each unit of study, I will have a SYMBALOO prepared. A SYMBALOO is a page where I can place digital content that will help your child further their knowledge on the topic we are studying in class. SYMBALOO can be accessed from any internet ready device. Each SYMBALOO has a link and all links are recorded in the science journal on the last page. Students can also use the SYMBALOO pages to help study and review content as we get closer to STAAR testing time.
SYMBALOO-Sedimentary Rock and Fossils

A great resource for learning about the formation of sedimentary rock and fossils. Plus, you can learn about tree rings and how they show evidence of past environments.

This SYMBALOO covers rapid and slow changes, land forms, weathering, erosion, and deposition.

Home work packets go home on Friday and are due the following Thursday. Homework is a crucial part of your child's learning process. The homework is an opportunity to review and practice the skills we are learning each day in class, as well as things the students learned in previous years of science instruction. Homework requirements:

  • Full name and date
  • Strategies on every question
  • Complete sentences, when asked, and thorough explanations

I encourage you to sign up for the Remind alerts. This is an excellent way to stay up to date with things going on at school in our specific classrooms. You only need to sign up for your child's homeroom teacher. Please join!

Text the class code of your child's homeroom teacher to: 81010
