OLVCS Updates
February 17, 2023
Dear Families and Friends of Our Lady of Victory Catholic School,
Today’s school Mass was sponsored by our 2nd grade, and they did an excellent job. The first reading, which was read so perfectly by Kateri W., was about the people of Babel who became so arrogant that they sought to build a tower to the sky (Genesis 11). Our Lord reminded us through the Gospel that it is not in doing great things that we attain true glory, but only through losing the vainglory and following him. Please pray for all who work, learn, and visit our school that they may always follow Jesus, particularly in a world that can be unwelcoming to the truths of our faith.
In gratitude,
Jim Hoy
Expanding Sports Participation
An effort is underway to expand sports programs for non-public schools in our community by opening access to public school sports programs. Grier Yartz, a father of students at both OLV and SJCA, and other taxpayers in our parish community, are leading this endeavor. If you would like to find out more about how you can participate, please contact Grier at gyartz@macrosmith.com.

Girls Basketball Season Ends With Baskets All Around
The girls basketball team played their last game of the season on Friday, Feb 10th. While the game did not end with a win for Crusaders, if you were outside of the gym when the last buzzer blasted, you would’ve thought the OLVCS girls team had won a nail biter. The screaming and yelling in the gym was deafening – all in celebration of 7th grader Ellie Posner's first and only basket of the season, right before the final buzzer. With Posner’s bucket, all of the girls (most of which had not played on a competitive basketball team before) had scored at least once during the season, a goal Coach Straub and Coach Lea had for the season. The girls team will not be competing in the Diocesan tournament due to scheduling conflicts. Thank you to all the parents and teachers who supported the team this year with rides to away games, snacks, and most importantly cheering at the games!
Boys Team Ends Regular Season and Looks To Diocesan Tournament
The Crusader Boys Basketball Team ended its regular season last week, with some tough opponents. On Feb 8, the boys faced off with Bellefonte. The B-team score was OLV 12, Bellefonte 41. In the A-team game, the Crusaders did better, but could not clinch the win. The game ended OLV 30, Bellefonte 42. On Feb 10, the boys team traveled to take on the Southern Huntington Rockets. The B-team game ended OLV 8, SH 14. The A-team game ended OLV 33, SH 42. The boys team will compete in the Diocesan tournament, which takes place on the last weekend in February. A middle school team from each Diocesan Quadrant will compete. OLVCS represents the Northern Quadrant.
Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy Updates
Habemus Papam (“We have a Pope!”)
Each spring, the SJCA sophomore class conducts the "Model Church" simulation, inspired by the Model UN. The highlight for many students is conclave, when the College of Cardinals meets to elect a pope. Congratulations to Cardinal Charlie Yartz, who was elected this past week and has taken the name Pope Benedict XVII. The Model Church culminated with the Fourth Ecumenical Council of Boalsburg ("Boalsburg IV"). For more information about how Saint Joseph’s shares the teaching of Jesus Christ and traditions of the Catholic Church with its students, click on the Faith tab at www.stjoeacad.org.
Get In the Pack: Apply Now to Saint Joseph’s
