SOCIAL STUDIES STUDENTS ATTEMPT TO MAKE FIRE
Using sticks, rocks and other materials, students in Mrs. Melanie Miller’s high school World History and Civilization social studies class recently tried to start a fire without the use of matches or fire starters.
Keeping in mind the materials that ancient man might have available to them, the students researched what the best materials would be to use. The students then brought into school materials that they hoped would help them start a fire. Many tried rubbing sticks together, used rocks as a base, and tried grass as a possible way to start their fire.
“Many of the students thought it would be easy to make fire,” said Mrs. Miller. “We spent a couple of days in class researching. Each student made a presentation of different ways to make fire without using modern methods. We looked at types of wood and strategies to create a spark. It was hard work and even though some created smoke, it wasn't enough to get the fire started.”
KEEPING FLOWERS FRESH
Students in Ms. Susan Seitz’s eighth grade science class recently applied their lab skills to determine the best way to keep cut flowers fresh.
As a part of a controlled experiment, the students placed a cut flower in one jar with plain water and another flower in sugar water. The goal of the lab was to see which water type kept the flower fresh longer.
During the experiment, the flowers were observed and students recorded the number of petals on the flowers as well as the flower’s appearance as a means to determine the flower quality. Once the results were reached, the students documented their observations and drew conclusions as to which flower stayed fresh longer.
“This experiment was for the students to begin the scientific method. They first had to identify their variables to aid them in writing their hypothesis which was to be tested. The variables as part of this controlled experiment that they had to determine were the manipulated and responding variables,” said Ms. Seitz. “The manipulated variable is true variable that they were changing, their water as they added sugar and their responding variable was the flower as they were making observations to see how the flower was affected by adding sugar to the water.”
The general conclusion was the sugar water flower lasted longer and had better quality than the flower in plain water.
