Nonfiction Reading
Incorporating current events into your classrooms is a great way to give students practice reading non-fiction material. Students learn to think critically, become concerned about social and global issues, and analyze how they can contribute to society by gaining a stronger social and global awareness. Many of the sites mentioned below are great resources to use with your students on a daily basis.

Youngzine is a website where students can learn about current events shaping their world. The design is simple, engaging and interactive.

Teachers can sign up for a free account and add students. Teachers have the flexibility to assign articles and movies fr students to view/read and then comment on in a discussion board. Common Core Based
Newsela
Newsela is another site where the teacher signs up for a class account and then shares a class code with students so they can join. Teachers can assign high interest articles on the student's reading level. Common Core Based

Scholastic News Online is a site that offers current event articles that are high interest to students. No sign in required.
