Prevention of Prescription and Drug Misuse
We are losing too many of our children, friends, siblings, parents and other family members to prescription drugs and opioids. We need to learn from their deaths and change the conditions that led to this epidemic. It is going to take all of us to take our communities back.
- “In 2016, there were 1,762 opioid-related overdose deaths in Michigan—a rate of 18.5 deaths per 100,000 persons compared to the national rate of 13.3 deaths per 100,000 (National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA, 2018).”
- “In 2015, Michigan providers wrote 96.1 opioid prescriptions per 100 persons, but the national average during 2015 was 70 opioid prescriptions per 100 persons (NIDA, 2018).”
- “In 2014, young adults between the ages 18 to 25 had the highest percentage of nonmedical prescription drug use (SAMHSA, 2015).”
Dear Younger Me: Lessons about Pain Medication
What You Can Do to Help Prevent Prescription and Opioid Drug Misuse
Most young people get prescription medicines from a relative or someone they know. A lot of teens develop physical dependence to pain medications that can lead to opioid use disorders use after sports injuries or wisdom teeth extraction.
1. Get rid of unused or unwanted prescription medications. The Capital Area Take Back Meds Program includes many local pharmacies and law enforcement agencies. Find a pharmacy or law enforcement drop-off location near you on this site.
2. If you take prescription medications, keep them in a lock box so your teen or their friends won't have access.
3. If your teen has to have a surgery or has an injury, talk to your doctor about suitable alternatives to opioids for pain relief.
