Charlevoix Conservation District
October 2020 Update
A Gift for You...
Fall has always been a busy season, second to our busiest, Spring! But this year Fall is coming in close. In addition to the changes and maintenance needed at our Beach Grass nursery, despite not harvesting, the Native Plant Demonstration Garden has also been keeping staff on our toes this Fall. After a successful 2nd Annual Fall Plant Sale, and additional donations provided by participants, we were able to round up over 600 native plants for the front of our office. This great collaborative project will bring so much more than beautification and visibility to our District. It is a community garden, created for education, inspiration and with purpose - for you! We are so excited to share this gift that's been given to us with all of you! We hope it will be an ongoing project that everyone can be a part of in some way. It is set up to welcome you to walk through, learn and gain inspiration for your own garden. Many thanks to all who helped it happen!
New District Brochure
Coming Soon! The newest publication coming to the District is the revision of our main brochure. Complete with updated photos, programs & services. We are working with local business, Decka Digital. We are very excited about this new addition and hope to have it available shortly after our Annual Meeting Open House...just waiting on your vote to confirm our new Board of Directors ;)
Community Room: Gaudy Giggles Paint Parties, Tuesdays 6pm
Gaudy Giggles is back! Starting in October, Tuesdays at 6pm - painting begins at 6:15 sharp! - Jen Barratt will be hosting her famous Paint Parties in our Community Room once again. These workshops have a fee of $35 per person (canvas and materials included) and require RSVP by contacting Jen directly by phone or via Facebook messenger. Contact Jen at 231-437-0828 (call/text) or message on Facebook: Gaudy Giggles: Paint Parties. All ages welcome!
Native Plant Demonstration Garden Planted!
We are excited to share with you our newly planted Native Garden! Provided all by the way of donations, starting with local native plant enthusiast, Pat Brinker, and her donation of $400 to begin the project. Pat's idea to begin a demonstration garden on site came together by way of additional plant donations from Vern Stephens of Designs By Nature and Birdsfoot Native Nursery of South Boardman. Additional support for the garden was also provided by participants through our Fall Native Plant Sale through flat donations and rounding up orders. A total of $280 was raised through our Fall sale, with our largest donation for this year's sale from local resident, Nancy Winter. Many thanks to everyone for their support - every little bit adds up and makes a huge difference!
The plan is to have a walk through demonstration garden to assist with educational workshops and our fall plant sale fundraiser, but also inspiration for any landowner interested in learning more about what to plant and how to plant for water & soil conservation, increasing habitat for pollinators, or general information on planting with native plants.
Check out our photo gallery below to see the evolution process of our new demo garden. Stop by anytime for your viewing pleasure! Coming soon: signs & info for each species!
We can't wait to see what it looks like this time next year!

District Annual Meeting Open House - November 12th, 6-7pm
In lieu of our traditional Annual Meeting event, typically held at the "Old Middle School" in Boyne City, and catered by the Boyne City Hospitality Class, we decided to try something a little different this year. The District will be hosting the Annual Meeting "Open House" style at our office location (303 North St., Boyne City). A few of our conservation partners will be on site with information about their programs or products. Peruse & schmooze while you snack on "to-go" style refreshments provided by the District. Everyone is welcome, but Charlevoix County residents are encouraged to vote for incoming or renewing board members before you go! Stop by anytime between 6 & 7 pm, tour the District & our new Native Plant Demonstration Garden, our programs & services, chat with board members, staff & our partners, then cast a quick ballot and grab some tasty local refreshments on your way out! Guaranteed to add some inspiration to your day! As always, mask regulations apply, thank you :) More details coming soon.
