Learning Lab Exploration
This week we acknowledged International Peace! Through books, students are learning ways to spread peace and be peaceful human beings. We have also practiced saying peace in many languages such as hey ping, paz, shaanti, and mir! We have been working on many peace writing projects discussing ways to be peaceful at school and ways to be a peacemaker and a peacebreaker. We used motor planning skills to make large peace signs with our bodies on the playscape! We have been singing songs such as Peace In My Fingers, and Peace Begins With Me.
Through the peace project, students were introduced to new vocabulary including fairness, trustworthy, uplift, communicate, respect, generosity. We will continue to use these words throughout the school year. Adopt them at home too!
Students love to doodle. The doodle project has been a great way for students to learn about lines and shapes and how to use them in a sketch. We have also had discussions about colors and what they represent. Students have been interested in noticing shades of color and creating interesting color names.
Our culinary arts workshop this week with Miss DINA from USF Extension was smooth sailing proving we are Master Chefs. The homemade hummus was delightful with pita bread. We noticed that the hummus was really lemony. So refreshing and delicious! A great snack to introduce trying new foods, healthy lifestyle and healthy ways we can create a snack.

Important Reminders!!! Help us work smarter and not harder.
Arrival--Please respect your child's school schedule and be sure to arrive on the playscape at their scheduled time. Being on time is vital to having a positive start to the school day. Enrichments and projects begin immediately as students arrive. Late arrivals mean missing out on some important aspects of the curriculum.
Dismissal--
We are informing all parents that have been continuously late picking up at dismissal. Lates fees will be billed on October 1st, 2019 when October tuition is processed. It has been excessive this month and is a hardship on our team and distressing for the students. We have printed the attendance report for the month of August and September and there is an ongoing issue. $25.00 for the first 5 minutes and $1.00 per minute thereafter. Consistent lateness may result in termination. Please be mindful of your time and the team's limited time.
We want to remind everyone that deadlines are extremely important. Whether it be a scholastic order, a form for administration, a wish list item, or a project all deadlines have a reason. When deadlines are not respected it has a domino effect on others including students, other families, and administration. On a side note from this point forward all scholastic orders are to be sent online. Our online order code is provided with each order. This will make ordering easier for families as you can pay with a card and easier on the team to process.
Thank you for your cooperation and dedication in helping the teachers "work smarter not harder".

Serving Your Child Without ServantHood
By Terra Tominelli
Our children have a way of working magic on us. We want to teach, guide and nurture them. We would like to know that we are doing everything in our power to help them succeed in life. In this regard, we make sure they are getting the proper amount of rest, we provide the healthiest foods for them, we attempt to send them to the best schools, and we show them love and tenderness. However, do we ever reach a point wherein we are doing too much for our children? Is there such a thing? Though our children deserve our full attention, help, and security, we must not mentally paralyze them. We should provide enough assistance and help for them to eventually do things on their own.
As an early childhood educator, I work with children in large groups, small groups and individually. During these times, it is easy for me to decipher which children do not do much on their own and which are given opportunities to do for themselves. Sometimes the differences between the “independent” children and the “dependent” children are significant. For example, dependent children may not be developing the proper gross motor skills because someone is always carrying them or they have difficulty eating finger foods because someone is always feeding them. When a child is given the opportunity to be independent, delays in certain skills or stages will not be as prevalent.
The independent child is also not afraid to try new things. Before they try a new activity or toy, they will look to their guardian for reassurance but they will be willing to try because they are self-sufficient. The dependent child may not be as daring and oftentimes expect their guardian to routinely do the things they cannot but are very capable. Dependency becomes a burden to both the receiver and the giver because there is always an expectancy that neither can be without the other. For some parents, their child’s dependency on them assures them that they are loved and needed; however, as the child grows their lack of independence will keep them from pursuing opportunities on their own.
“Serving without Servanthood” means that the person you provide services for understands that you are not liable to attend to their every beck and call. They also understand that the services you provide are temporary and are subject to change over time. The same concept can be used with your preschoolers. It is always helpful to reflect on the things that we do when caring for children. The effects we have on them can last a lifetime.
