Mr. Nakano's 2nd/3rd Grade Classroom
A Note from Mr. Nakano
Hard to believe that our first trimester is almost coming to a conclusion! It has been remarkable seeing your child's progress and look forward to the successes they'll achieve the rest of the year.
I hope your family has a wonderful Thanksgiving week. All month long, we have been writing about what we are thankful for and it has been wonderful hearing them share their stories.
Dates to Remember
November 16th: End of 1st Trimester
November 20th: Minimum Day
November 21st-23rd: Thanksgiving Break
November 30th: Reports available online after 3pm
Scholastic Book Clubs
Scholastic Book Club is a fantastic and easy way to encourage your child to read, read, read! The extra benefit is that every time your child orders a book, your child’s class receives points, money, or books that support our learning! Please click on the link below and enter your child's class code to start your reading adventure!
The deadline to order books is: Friday, November 16.
Students will be reading books of their choice every day. We anticipate they'll go through a lot of books! We have classroom libraries and the school library available, but students may also bring books from home. We want them to be reading books they love!
A good rule of thumb is between 100 points below and 50 points above their lexile level. 3rd grade students have their current lexile levels on their STAR Reading reports, while we are currently testing 2nd graders on their levels.

Language Arts
We will continue to review important comprehension and writing skills we've learning so far this year. Our focus this week will be discovering and analyzing the main idea of a text! We will also continue to practice our opinion writing by creating strong paragraphs with clear details.
Math
We will continue to work with money and values of coins. We will take a closer look at the size of different coins as well as the designs/symbols on the front and back so we can differentiate between them all!
Social Studies
The month of November is all about family and heritage! Along with learning how to interview and write biographies, we will learn about what life was like long ago! We will compare and contrast life from long ago to life today to find many similarities and differences.

Building Responsibility
Now that our students have fully settled in in third grade, a goal we have for all students is to continue to build responsibility. Here are a few ways you can support from home:
1. Create a weekly schedule with your child. Help guide them to check on their responsibilities for the day and build a routine where they check to make sure they have everything they need before leaving for school each day. Is it a PE day? Library day? Any other important events?
2. Help your student arrive to school on time. If your child is not walking in the door immediately at 8:15 they are sent to the office to get a late slip. These are valuable minutes of learning that are wasted. Lately we have had students showing up as late as 8:45. Consider how an employer would respond to an employee arriving late. Take the initiative to build the responsibility of being on time in your child starting now. This is an incredibly valuable life skill.

Field Trip and Special Events
If you plan to donate towards the cost of our field trips and special events, please send your cash donations (recommendation $60 per student) to school on or before November 20th. All donations are voluntary. Please note, that while it is permissible under state law for IUSD to collect fees for field trips, all students will be allowed to participate regardless of whether a financial contribution is made.
