Just the Facts...September 4, 2019
What Starts Here Changes The World...
If you are a new parent (or even a returning parent that has forgotten) I want to let you know a little about this weekly newsletter and what you might see on a weekly basis.
What is Just the Facts?
If you are a new or a returning parent to Lakeside Elementary and you have received this newsletter you may be wondering what "Just the Facts" actually is.
- (I hope our returning families remember it though)
Simply put, this weekly newsletter is my way of communicating some campus wide news, dates, or reminders. I strive to make this weekly newsletter informative but not too cumbersome. There may be times where this newsletter has a lot of information or impending deadlines but often times there are just campus wide updates. Please carve out a few minutes each week to review it because it truly is "Just the Facts."
You should expect to receive "Just the Facts" Wednesday nights at approximately 6pm.
Please also note that if you ever misplace your weekly "Just the Facts" email we will include a link to our most recent newsletters on our campus website so you can access it directly from there at any time.
Specific grade level updates including curriculum connections will be shared in a weekly Grade Level Newsletter.
I hope you find this information useful.
Thank you for taking the time to review it.
Safety Drills
Safety
I’m sure that most of you have heard of a “Fire Drill” but have you heard the term “LockDown Drill?” One of the ways we try to plan for specific situations is through our Standard Response Protocols. While we hope that we never have the need to put a real protocol in place we do spend some time practicing throughout the year in order to prepare our learners on how to react in various emergency situations.
*As a side note, if a True Emergency were to take place at Lakeside we would send you a Parentlink notification (like this one) to make you aware that something took place. We would not necessarily announce or let you know when a practice drill took place however. I want you to be aware of this because often times a child will inform their parents that they “locked down and the police came to Lakeside” without distinguishing between a real emergency and a practice.
Here is a brief review of our drills and what our kids will hear and do during a given drill.
Lockout! (Secure the Perimeter)
- This drill may take place if a unique situation is taking place outside of the school building (like a Coppell Coyote sighting). We will use this drill to keep our kids indoors but all classes will take place as usual.
Lockdown! (Locks, Lights, Out of Sight)
- This drill will take place if a unique situation has entered or is taking place inside of the building. During this drill our entire campus of learners and educators are expected to move away from sight and maintain silence. Sometimes this may mean that our kids will “lockdown” in the nearest restroom or office. As we practice we will stress the importance for them to “lockdown” in the nearest space. Learners and educators can only be dismissed from this drill by a police officer or firefighter.
Evacuate!
- This drill is what you will relate to as a “Fire Drill.” During this drill a potential hazard (fire, gas, etc) is in the building and learners are asked to stop what they are doing, exit with their class in a safe manner, and go to a designated spot.
Shelter!
- This drill is what you may know as a “Duck and Cover Drill.” During this drill learners are expected to drop to the floor in a secure location (usually near an interior wall) take cover by placing their hands over their heads and wait in silence until the situation has subsided.
Some drills take place monthly and some take place quarterly. It is always our goal in a drill or in a true emergency to keep our kids safe and calm. I hope you find this information beneficial.
We recently practiced our first "Evacuation" drill and our kids did a great job.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Flags
Have you wondered what those colorful flags hanging under both our US and Texas Flags stand for? Please check out this Air Quality Flag Program link where you can read about this unique to Lakeside initiative that was brought to us by our fabulous Nurse Lander and by a grant from our awesome PTO.
- Please be aware that tomorrow will be a "red flag" day which means that sensitive groups should limit outdoor activity during the school day.
Repeated Information:
Guidance
During the school year at Lakeside we will work on four main characteristics to help become better individuals through Citizens of Character. The four characteristics this year are Grit, Integrity, Empathy and Effective Communication!
The first Citizen of Character quality this nine weeks is grit. In guidance lessons we will focus on helping learners understand what it means to have grit. In doing so we will work on growth mindset (positive thinking), coping skills and self-control. Grit is not how smart you are or how talented, but it is a commitment to push in the face of failure or struggle. Everyone is capable of showing grit.
A few ways you can help foster grit with your learner:
Be a positive role model.
Allow your child to make mistakes, and teach him to accept them.
Help your child set goals.
Teach your child to problem solve.
Praise effort, not ability.
Nurture your child’s passions.
Be a family that embraces challenges. Nurture your child’s passions.
Share your passions and challenges you've encountered.
