Thanksgiving Message from the Principal
Thanksgiving is nearly here, marking a time when many pause to reflect on the people and events for which we are grateful. ISB is an incredible community to which I am thankful to belong. Our students demonstrate not only academic determination, but also compassion and empathy for others. We are fortunate for the support our families provide to our school, from helping their students get up early to ensuring homework is completed to the many hours of volunteer work to enrich our students' school experience. I'm grateful for the dedication of our staff, doing whatever it takes to ensure all students have access to and support in the IB Middle Years and Diploma Programs. IB for All is a worthy goal for which they work tirelessly. Wishing you a safe and happy Thanksgiving, filled with opportunities for gratitude.
Amazon Fundraiser
Will you be shopping online this holiday season? Raise funds for ISB without spending a penny more than you would spend anyway. It’s simple to support ISB by linking to Amazon through our webpage and generate a donation to our school without increasing your purchase costs. Amazon will donate up to 10% of your purchase to ISB. Donations are used to provide IB Exam scholarships for our seniors and support student activities and clubs. Since 2013 we have raised over $3,800 thanks to your generous support. Please let your family and friends know they can also support ISB by using this link!
Picking up Students Early
If you know you will be picking up your student before the end of the school day, please send a note with them indicating the date and time they will be picked up as well as the reason for the absence. They should show the note to the Attendance Secretary when they arrive at school, and then to the teacher at the beginning of the class period from which they need to be excused. At the indicated time, the teacher will send them to the main office to meet you. Allow at least five minutes for your student to show up. A parent/guardian must sign the student out before leaving the school.

Sojourn Project
If you are ready to take a trip through the civil rights movement, meet with leaders and their families, and have an unforgettable experience, it’s time to learn more about the Sojourn Project. All interested students (along with their parent/guardian) should plan to attend a student family orientation meeting this coming Thursday, November 21st, 6:30 pm, at Jesuit High School. More information directly from the Sojourn Project team is below:
We highly recommend that the student and parent/guardian attend the student family orientation meeting together, however it is not mandatory. Attendance does not commit you/your student. It is simply to provide you with information about the program prior to enrollment.
The Agenda will include:
- Day to Day itinerary of the trip
- A program overview
- How your student can receive 3 college units for participating
- Rules on the journey
- Financial Aid Scholarship opportunities and fundraising support: Annually we give out over $70,000 in scholarships to students in need, and throughout our history students have raised over $1.5 million with tools provided by Sojourn Project. If you decide you want your student to participate in the program, at the end of the meeting Sojourn Project will collect a $500.00 non-refundable deposit to book their flight immediately. If you cannot afford the deposit and need to fundraise, we ask that you attend the meeting, complete the enrollment form, get the fundraising information packet and we will hold a spot for you until the fundraising money comes in - you will just not be officially booked at this time.
Learn more about the power of our program by exploring our high school information page and/or watching a short video.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Dana Hart at the Sojourn Project office, (650) 952-1510 or info@sojournproject.org.
Global Student Conference – International Opportunity for Students Aged 14-18
CAS Trips is an educational tour operator that creates trips inspired by CAS (Creativity, Activity, and Service). They have created a special program with IB students in mind, the Global Student Conference, which they piloted in Edinburgh last summer. This video shows you a little of what the Conference is like. The weeklong program includes keynote speakers, breakout/discussion sessions, and fun and interesting CAS challenges all while exploring new cities with students from IB schools around the world. The total cost is $999 (enrollment fee: $449) and is all-inclusive except for airfare.
This coming summer’s programs will be held in three locations:
- Singapore: July 6-11, 2020; Marlborough College (Johor, Malaysia)
- Edinburgh: July 20-25, Fettes College
- Boston: August 3-8, St. Mark's School (Southborough, Massachusetts)
The Theme for Summer 2020 is Global Climate Crisis: Innovation, Impact, Action
Whether you call it global warming or climate change, we all know that the crisis is real. The UN warns that the global climate crisis is the greatest ever threat to human rights. This Conference serves to inspire students to put words into action by discovering how technology and innovation can help us make a positive impact in regards to the global climate crisis. The theme will be the same at all three conferences, and the academic program will be appropriate for students who are just beginning their study of climate change in addition to those who are experienced in climate change activity.
This is NOT a BSD or ISB endorsed or sponsored trip, but a regional IB organization, NIBA (Northwest Association of IB World Schools), is sponsoring 2 scholarships for JUNIORS (the CLASS of 2021) which will cover the cost of registration ($999) and $600 towards travel expenses. (One of these scholarships is designated specifically for students with demonstrated financial need.)
Juniors, to apply for these scholarships:
- Write 2 paragraphs explaining how you embody the IB mission statement: The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
- Write 1 paragraph explaining why we should choose you to be one of ISB’s two representatives.
- Send these three paragraphs to Amy Schuff (amy_schuff@beaverton.k12.or.us) by November 25th with:
- your name
- your email address
- the location of the conference you are hoping to go attend
- whether or not you demonstrate significant financial need

Culture Week Presenters Needed!
What do mahjong, soccer, and running with the bulls have in common? They are all confirmed topics for Culture Week 2020, but we still need MORE TOPICS and MORE PRESENTERS!
We are in need of about 28 more presenters for our 2020 Culture Week workshops. Culture Week only happens at ISB and it’s a wonderful opportunity for our students to hear from parents, community members, staff and fellow students about a variety of topics. If you have a hobby, a sport or a pastime you are passionate about and if you would be interested in sharing your expertise with our students, we’d like to hear from you! Even if you have a topic that doesn’t quite fit into this year’s theme of Sports and Leisure Around the World, but that is timely and interesting, please consider speaking to our students at Culture Week. If you know someone else who would be an excellent speaker, please ask them if they would be a presenter. Our deadline for finding speakers is December 13. Culture Week will be January 28-31, 2020.
Please complete the speaker form if you would like to be a Culture Week presenter.
Feel free to email us at cultureweekisb@gmail.com if you have questions. Thank you.
Middle School Boundary Adjustment Advisory Committee
The Middle School Boundary Adjustment Advisory Committee held a public meeting last Tuesday at Stoller Middle School. The meeting was live streamed and the video is available on the Middle School Boundary Adjustment webpage.
The primary activity was a visioning workshop, where the public helped create the first set of themes for potential middle school boundaries. Everyone in attendance was at a table with approximately 6-8 people; they each had a large district-wide map and markers with which to work. The objective was for each table, as a group, to create a new boundary for the new middle school, reduce the size of Stoller Middle School, and amend other middle school boundaries to accommodate the changes created by the first two items.
This exercise was more qualitative than quantitative, forecast data was not provided on the maps at this meeting. The emphasis of the exercise was for participants to show the committee how they see their neighborhood identities, where “natural” boundaries (such as major roads, parks/open space, etc.) may be, and anything else that should be taken into consideration by the Committee. Committee members joined table groups throughout the room to listen in on the conversations.
The workshop maps have been posted to the Middle School Boundary Adjustment webpage.
Following the workshop staff will analyze the workshop maps and will provide the Committee with the data coming from those themes. This will serve as the starting point for the Committee's work in narrowing down a set of options to an eventual recommendation.
The next meeting will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. at Conestoga Middle School, 12250 SW Conestoga Dr., 97008 and the public will have the opportunity to participate in a similar visioning activity.

Senior Cap & Gown Orders - Nov. 19th
Seniors received Jostens packets at an assembly on November 7th. As a result of two seniors' CAS project advocating for incorporation of sustainable materials in ISB's commencement activities, this year we will be using biodegradable gowns. The finish is a different sheen than graduation robes by earlier graduation classes. Jostens will be back on campus Tuesday, Nov. 19th to collect orders for commencement announcements, caps & gowns, and other regalia. Orders may be placed without payment. Students in need of financial assistance should talk to their school counselor. Seniors who plan to wear a cap and gown from another source will still need to order a tassel and stole. Ask your Senior for the information packet and/or visit Jostens online.
Senior Photo Deadline - Nov. 26th
The deadline to submit Senior Photos for inclusion in the yearbook is one week away - Tuesday, November 26th. In order to be included in the yearbook, senior photos must align with the specifications below:

Early Bird price of $65 is available until Dec. 20th, after that the price goes up.
Senior Parents/Guardians, did you know supporting Grad Night can be easy-peasy, too? Sign up to volunteer here, or (even easier!) use the Guilt Free Pass! It's on the GN website, or you can print the file below and drop it off in the GN box in the office.
The Bottle & Can Drive is going beautifully - the ISB community has raised over $500 so far this fall! Thanks for your continued support of the Class of 2020. You can still bring your redeemable bottles and cans for drop off on Thursday morning or in the blue bins in the cafeteria.
FRISB
Volunteer Update
We had over 400 middle schoolers at the social last month. That means that just less than 80 students weren’t there! The students enjoyed the blow-up obstacle course and the other activities. We had 25 volunteers there in addition to staff making sure everything was safe and well supervised. A huge shout-out to parent Bryndle Mastripolito for showing up at 10 am to help with permission slip checking and staying until 4 pm. She made sure everything ran smoothly!
Mark February 21st from 2 to 4 pm on your calendars for the next Middle School Social! We will need volunteers AND we want your middle schoolers to be there! If you have any questions about volunteering at ISB, please contact isbvolunteers@gmail.com.

AND THE WINNER IS …. Drumroll! 6th grade has won a donut party and will enjoy donuts on November 20th during Advisory!
Please remember: We will happily accept your donation throughout the year! Please turn in the red envelope to the front office any time! Thank you!
