JBD Seagull FOCUS

October 12, 2018 "Embrace the Adventure!"

From the Principal

Another day home! It is our hope that you all did not have too much damage. Many folks in our area still do not have power, and John B. Dey is one of the schools on the powerless list. We have minimal damage and our school system is on top of it to get things ready and running for Monday!

This week, I wanted to share some math research with you. A couple of weeks ago, I shared the philosophy of Word Study vs. memorization of spelling lists. Nationwide trends are focused on the same type of thinking in math. Many of you may struggle when it comes to helping your child with math. I get it as we all learned differently in the past decades. I recall the terror of speed tests in second grade where the teacher would rattle off addition and subtraction problems at the rate of 1 per 5 seconds. My stomach would literally hurt. Memorization of math facts was expected. Thinking about how to solve the problems was not. Personally, I was a stress case when it came to these types of assessments and many of our children still feel that way.

Knowing math facts quickly is definitely helpful. However, if you can't solve it immediately, skills are needed to logically solve the problem-without a calculator. The article below shares what Computational Fluency is and offers other research and activities. Virginia Beach City Public Schools works with our children to learn how to solve complex problems in formats such as a Math Congress and utilizing real world problem solving skills. During the school day, math memorization practice is not where we place value. Hands-on, cooperative learning, and problem solving skills are fostered.

Enjoy the article below and enjoy the weekend.
