Mrs. Ralston's Weekly Update
1-18-16
Happy MLK Jr. Day!
I hope you all had a nice long weekend, and I hope you found time to reflect on the impact Martin Luther King, Jr. made on our lives.
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
-Martin Luther King, Jr.
Hall of Heroes Costumes Needed
As I explained in the newsletter last week, fifth graders will be participating in Hall of Heroes on February 10th. Students are encouraged to dress up as their hero for this event. Please start searching your house for a costume for your child to wear. I will be happy to provide any props or pieces to costumes I can find too! If you view their Google Doc app on their iPad you can see the name of their hero and the research your child has done so far.

English Language Arts: We are currently exploring the essential question of 'How can learning about nature be useful?' We are reading fantasy texts to learn about this topic. We are practicing summarizing, identifying theme, and using context clues again this week. The focus in our writing is word choice. Also, they are learning about verb tenses.
Math: We are recognizing and measuring the volume of solid figures.
Social Studies: We are researching our heroes!
