Parkside Post
May 2023
Greetings Parkside Families!
It is hard to believe we are in the final weeks of the 2022-2023 school year! We have made wonderful memories together, learned a lot, and will continue to challenge ourselves as we wrap up the 4th quarter!
I can't explain how much I have loved joining the Parkside community as your principal. I have enjoyed getting to know our students, parents, and staff and can't wait to continue this journey at PSE!
We are in the final stretch and our students are all Rising to the Challenge as they focus on their state and district assessments! Please continue to help us by ensuring your child is getting a good night's sleep, eating a healthy breakfast (at home or at school), and encourage them to do their very best!
As always, we appreciate your support and your partnership in our focus on student success each and every day!

Walker Procedures for Kindergarten and 1st Grade
The safety of our students is a top priority. All kindergarten and 1st grade students who walk home, need to be met at the walker gate by an adult who has the walker tag. Students will not be released without the proper walker tag being presented. If you forget your tag, our staff will call the front office to verify approved pick ups. The person picking up the child must have a photo ID to verify identity, if they don't have the walker tag. Students who walk home with older students, with parent permission, are permitted to leave.
Thank you for partnering with us to make Parkside a safe place for all!

Literacy & Learning
Wow! I just cannot believe our year is almost at an end. There is still so much to do with the students to finish the year. We know families are looking forward to the summer break and a more relaxed routine. I know I look forward to being able to have time to read those books I have stacked up at home since I will have a bit more time. I am sure your child has many books they would like to read this summer as well. My summer reading is made of the books I want to read. It is full of discoveries, cookbooks, crafting books, and anything else that I think I might be interested in reading. If we get kids excited about their summer reading, it will be such a gift to them. Not only do they benefit academically in maintaining and even growing their reading skill, but reading is also an activity that can sustain them for a lifetime! We just need to lead the way. Below are a few tips to help make it fun!
· Have them read their favorite book again: Rereading a book is a very powerful tool that can help readers develop stamina, deeper concentration, and joy in the book! The book will take on a more personal meaning for your child and help build the love of reading.
· Read anything that sounds interesting: Read something fun and light, craft magazines, food magazines and yummy recipes, this can help create a purpose for reading for your child.
· Remember that if your child begins reading a book and just is not enjoying the story that it is okay to put it down and find a new book that they might enjoy better.
· Summer Reading with Scholastic: An opportunity from Scholastic reading begins in May and continues through the beginning of September. As students log minutes for reading on the scholastic book site they unlock awards. As the minutes build up, books are donated to students in need throughout the country. Join the challenge and your child can help build minutes with students all over the country! Check out the information for parents here. https://www.scholastic.com/site/summer-reading.html
Families, the end goal is to help our children become lifelong readers so the world opens up for them… enjoy your summer and happy reading
Math This Month
It’s hard to believe the school year is coming to an end! Over the summer spend some quality time together and play games. This helps to build foundational skills in many content areas and supports critical thinking skills. Your student also has flashcards that they can play many games with to develop mathematical fluency. Below is a list of some games that you can play together!
Who Has More?:Shuffle a deck of flashcards and deal out all the cards between two players. Each player turns a card over at the same time and solves it. The player with the highest answer wins and collects the cards. When the players are out of cards, the player with the most cards wins.
Tic Tac Toe: Layout nine flashcards in three rows of three. Give two players different colors of an object (e.g., paperclips, beans, coins, counters, etc.). Each player takes turns solving a card, then covers it with one of their objects with the ultimate goal of getting three in a row.
Sum it Up: Divide flashcards evenly between all players. Each player solves the problems on his or her flashcards and keep track of their answers on a piece of paper. Players total up the numbers on their paper and the highest total wins.
Model It: Give the student a flash card, then give them a manipulative such as snap cubes or counters. Let them represent the equation on the flash card with the manipulatives. If the equation is 2 + 3, the student should have a group of 2 items and a group of 3 items. This lets the students “see” the math. They can find the answer by counting. This is great for moving from concrete to abstract thinking.
We look forward to hearing about all of your summer adventures and can’t wait for next school year!
Science At Home
As summer approaches, it is time to get outside into nature. Summertime = family time, and there is nothing better to do as a family than spend some time outside in nature. Southwest Florida is FULL of great places to visit and sharpen those scientific observation skills. Some of my favorites include: (in order of distance from Parkside)
• Rookery Bay
• Naples Botanical Garden
• Baker Park
• Gordon River Greenway
• Naples Zoo
• Everglades Wonder Garden
• Corkscrew Swamp Audubon Sanctuary
• CREW walking trails
• Venice Beach – shark teeth hunting
*Some of these places are free, some have free days or discount days, and others have entry fees.
Monthly Student Recognition
Positive Referrals: We will continue to recognize students for exemplifying our Parkside Positive Behavior Expectations...Prepared to Learn, Respectful of Self and Others, Being Responsible. In addition to those expectations, we will continue with recognizing students who show behavior that demonstrates one of the 7 Habits. For May, we are focusing on Habit #6: Synergize and Habit #7: Sharpen the Saw
As part of our journey to become a Leader in Me school, we have recently provided every classroom with a copy of The 7 Habits of Happy Kids! This is a great resource for teaching children about the habits. There are discussion questions at the end of each story that you can use with your own children! If you would like a copy for your home, click the link below.
