Global Play Day on 2/2/22!
On Wednesday, February 2nd, Sussex Avenue School participated in Global School Play Day! What is that? Global School Play Day is an international initiative for students to engage in unstructured play without technology. It is crucial for children to have time to play with others to strengthen communication skills, spark creativity and their imaginations, and learn to cooperate and collaborate with others.
To make this a memorable and beneficial day for all students, we spent two class periods playing various games. There was one catch...the games were not to contain technology or batteries for students to engage with others. These games allowed students to utilize their creativity, communicate effectively and positively, and use skills developed in Language Arts, Math, and Social Studies to play the games and activities. Examples of games and activities included puzzles, board games (i.e., Sorry!, Life, etc.), cards, and team-building exercises (i.e., hula hoop pass, cup-stacking challenges). As a final activity, students reflected on Global Play Day. One theme that resonated was, "It is important to not always be on technology because you can have more fun with REAL people. "
