Message from the Principal
As the IHCS principal, I am always looking forward to actively investing in the school community on a consistent basis. Most recently, I have had the pleasure of visiting students at their homes to say hello and to remind them how much I care about them. My goal is to continue building on the successful school culture and academic excellence of Innovative Horizons Charter School at Nan Sanders. Additionally, IHCS has the reputation of being an excellent school, and I look forward to building on that reputation.
Upcoming Parent Workshop
The next parent workshop will be on Thursday October 8th, from 10:30AM-11:30AM lead by Demontea Thompson. Below is Demontea’s biography and some information about the workshop. We encourage all parents to join us for this great presentation!
Made for This: Building Resilient Students With Intentionality
By: Demontea Thompson M.Ed.
Researchers, practitioners, and lawmakers have been working to improve the educational outcomes of young people of color for quite some time. Improvements thus far have come from centering the voices of young people as we work toward a better system. This workshop will stretch the minds of parents by engaging them in a discussion-based presentation. Participants will be able to learn tools and tricks to understand their children and obtain new perspectives about navigating educational institutions. While examining race throughout this presentation, participants will be introduced to new and creative ways to discuss oppression and equity with their children and communities. There will be recommendations shared, and all participants will be able to ask questions.
Demontea Thompson is a Compton-native and the Executive Director of Together We Inspire – a Los Angeles-based nonprofit that improves current and former foster youth educational and career outcomes. He is also a Ph.D. student at UCLA in the School of Education, Urban Schooling Division. His research explores how educational institutions can facilitate success for young boys and men of color, particularly those who have had interactions with the child welfare and justice system.
Demontea is a slam poet and author of the inspirational autobiography, Raised From Scratch. As a TEDx Talk speaker and featured guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show for his community work, he focuses on putting research into practice. He received his master’s degree in education from the University of Southern California (USC) and his undergraduate degree in business management from Cal State Northridge (CSUN). He is a board member of the CSUN Alumni Association.
We hope you will join us for this amazing parent workshop opportunity!

Attendance Awareness
Reducing health related absences is key because illness is the top reason students and families give for missing school.
- Addressing fears about Covid-19 among students and families as they return to school for the start of the school year, and through any subsequent school closures, will help students focus and learn.
- Follow the advice of local health agencies and districts regarding clean environments and how to handle students who become ill if your building is open.
- Health professionals, particularly pediatricians and nurses, are allies for communicating with caregivers and schools about when students should stay home and when to return to school after being sick.
