I hear the word polity and I think of politics. Politics directly relates to government, and a polity is an organized society with a specific form of government.

WATCH OUT FOR

Polity is similar to the word politic. Understand that these are two different words with two different definitions. To differentiate the two, I remember that politic is an adjective. Someone can be politic, but there is no such thing as a politic.

PRACTICE!

Choose the letter with the bold-faced word used incorrectly:

a. The polity ran like a well-oiled machine with Mao Zedong at the head of the government.

b. An iconic polity is ISIS; they have their own form of government in which they follow exactly.

c. The Mexican polity is unorganized and considered an anarchy.

d. The popular polity in my town is the church youth group. There is a president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer of the group.
