PBL: Community Helpers!
This week, we wrapped up our Project Based Learning Unit on Community Helpers! Our neighborhood and community helper video were on display at the art show! Students also chose a community helper (police officer, firefighter, chef, dentist, doctor, scientist, teacher, architect, engineer, and vet) that they would like to write to and students wrote a thank you letter to them thanking them for their work in our community! We will keep you updated as to if we hear back from any of our pen pals! Students did a great job writing and their handwriting was amazing!
Mother's Day Tea and Spring Art Show!
On Friday, we celebrated our moms/special friends by having a tea! Moms/special friends arrived and were given several "cooking" themed gifts including a class cookbook, spoon, and hot pad! Students then also read a writing piece that they wrote for their moms/special friends! Students and moms/special friends got to tour our art show and check out all of the amazing pieces that students in Pre-K-5th have made throughout the second half of this year! Afterwards, students and moms/special friends, got to enjoy tea and cookies! Happy Mother's Day and enjoy your weekend!
Kicking off Character Day with the Writing Process!
This week, we kicked off our study of the writing process! Students learned the steps including prewriting, drafting, editing, and publishing! We also learned how to complete several different story maps! We read "Arthurs Pet Business" and completed a problem/solution story map and discussed how the characters solved problems! We read "Pinkalicious and the Slumber Party" and completed a plot map and discussed what happened in the beginning, middle, and the end of the story! We also completed a character profile for Pinkalicious! Finally, we read "Franklin Fibs" and completed a Character Chat Map! This will be the same format we will be using to develop our character from our stories for character day! We drew a picture of what the character looked like, wrote words to describe our character, shared what the character did in the story, and also wrote about whether we liked the character or not! On Monday, we will start completing our character chat webs for our own characters, which will lead us into our outline, rough draft, and final copy! Throughout this week, we also read all of our Character Day books and we are excited to get started!!
Mystery Reader, Ms. Portner and Lara, Liah's mom and sister!
On Wednesday, Liah's mom and sister, visited our classroom as Mystery Readers! They shared a very unique reading with us! They brought in "Room on the Broom" in English and German! Ms. Portner would read one page in English and Lara would read the same page in her book in German. Very cool! They also read "Stop Monkeying Around!" Afterwards, they treated us to cupcakes and coloring books! Thank you so much for reading to us! We had a great afternoon!
