St Jerome's Newsletter
Week 5 - Term 3 (Thursday 20 August)
St Jerome’s Primary School acknowledges and pays respect to the Traditional Owners and Elders, both past and present, of the lands on which this school is located.
Dear Parents and members of our school community
LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS
Lord, when the way seems, obscure before me,
give me strength to walk with trust.
When the distant scene is clouded,
let me rejoice that the new step is plain.
When you seem distant and hidden from my eyes,
let me trust you in my darkness and loneliness.
Lord, when I find it hard to pray do not leave me,
stay with me; support me,
for you are a God of mercy and compassion,
and you understand me always.
Car Park Safety
The vast majority of our parents do a tremendous job in the hectic rush of the morning and afternoon drop-off and pick-ups, however it only takes a moment of not paying attention for an accident to happen. Please continue to take extreme care around the neighbouring roads and especially Rockingham Road. PLEASE keep to the low speed limit plus obey the directional arrows in the carpark. I am attending the next Parish Council meeting on September 1st to discuss the recent City of Cockburn request to review the parking arrangements.
Practice makes perfect — or fairly close to. By Kelly Rudolph (thriveglobal.com)
Knowing the "right" thing to say and do as parents is daunting. I'm guessing you don't feel like a rock star parent 24/7.
But what if I told you there is ONE word you can add to your vocabulary that will help set your kids up for success for the rest of their lives. You'd let it flow effortlessly from your parenting lips, right?
Well, there is such a word, and that word is — "practice."
And it cultivates confidence and a "can do" attitude in kids when you use the word "practice" in place of the (more commonly used) word "try." And here's why:
Try implies failure, or at the very least, doubt. From a very young age we are always told to "try this," "try that" and "try, try again" ... "just try." But "try" implies the act of wondering what will happen instead of having a clear intention of success.
How many times have you heard someone say they tried something over and over and it didn't work? Or that they will try to call you or come over and never show?
Our subconscious programming tells us that try is a way out (even a cop-out ) for many. It's a word we use when we don't expect success or don't want to do something. "Oh well, at least you tried."
The word "practice", however, implies improvement and success. Practice always makes you better.
Everyone who is good at anything has practiced — doctors, musicians, athletes, students, speakers, singers and the list goes on and on. Did they try it the first time to see if they wanted to pursue it, yes, but when it came to improving, they practiced.
Even toddlers learning to walk are practicing. They have every intention of walking successfully and they keep at it until they do ... and that in itself is a tremendous lesson for us adults.
If you want to completely remove the detrimental t-word from your parenting vocabulary altogether (which I HIGHLY recommend), you can replace it with action and success oriented phrases like, "do it" and see if you like it. Or let's "look into it" and see if it's something you want to do. Or you could say, "Check it out" and see what you think.
These alternative phrases don't have the same negative association as the word "try".
True Story
One of my clients was practicing empowering language with her kids after she felt the tremendous difference positive language changes made in her own life.
Her 5-year old son wanted her to tie his shoes for him. She said, "You can tie your shoes." To which he replied, "I tried. I can't do it. You tie them."
She said, "Just practice. You can do it, practice makes you better." After successfully tying his shoes on the first attempt as he said the word "practice" to himself, he went over to his 18-month-old sister who was a bit frustrated trying to get one of her toys to work and told her, "You can do it. Just practice," and he cheered her on until she did it before telling his mom, "I'm a good big brother.”
In that powerful moment, my client and her children were given a gift with a simple concept — that will empower them for the rest of their lives. Her kids will know they can always improve instead of wondering if they will succeed.
So, which do you want for yourself and your child, "try," which implies doubt and failure — or "practice," which implies improvement and success?
Here's the tricky part. You've probably been using the t-word your whole life so it may take a while to get the hang of saying practice instead. Be gentle with yourself and keep practicing. Your kids are watching you and modeling what you do much more than they are listening to what you say.

Lapathon Friday 28th August
Next Friday we will hold our annual Lapathon to raise money for the Archbishop’s Lifelink Appeal and other charities that we support throughout the year. St Jerome’s families have always been very generous and our children have loved the opportunity to help others by participating.
This year we are incorporating an extra dimension to the Lapathon by raising awareness of the plight of Third World countries where access to fresh water is at a critical state. Mothers and children in some villages walk for tens of kilometres each day to reach a well or a river that will provide them with fresh water. They then have to return home carrying as much water as possible in whatever containers they have available. We are asking the children to bring a cup , paper or otherwise, on Friday week and in the last minutes of the Lapathon they will have to fill their cup with water and then try to compete the Lapathon without spilling any water.
We hope that families, parents, aunts, uncles & grandparents may wish to sponsor your children in this event and help us to support the Lifelink agencies, that do so much good here in the metropolitan area, and the many other charities that we donate to over the year. Sponsorship forms were sent home yesterday and parents are asked to return these as soon as possible after the Lapathon with the collected funds raised. No amount is too small as it all adds up to help those in need. Thnk you to all our families for their ongoing support and encouragement.
I have included the timetable below, should you wish to attend next Friday. Please remember that social distancing of two metres still applies.

It's time to clean out your book shelves and donate your pre-loved books to the St Jerome's GREAT BOOK SWAP CHALLENGE! We ask that families send their books in to school by the end of Week 6. On 2 September, students will be able to purchase a pre-loved book for a gold coin donation. All donations will go the Indigenous Literacy Foundation who will purchase new books for children living in remote communities. We thank you for your generosity.
Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum - Parent Tips
Tip #5 – Model speaking about your feelings. This includes unhappy as well as happy feelings. Everyone has the right to their feelings.
Tip #6 – Explain the difference between dobbing and telling. Dobbing is to get someone into trouble – telling is because you feel unsafe.

Kindy Incursion
Last Wednesday the Kindy students enjoyed a visit from Farmer Damian's Moobile Farm. You might like to follow Farmer Damian on his Facebook page. He is often at local farmers' markets, Bunnings and community fairs. The children loved his friendly dog, the cuddly sheep, noisy ducks and chickens and especially the incredibly soft rabbits. And yes, his business is a MOOBILE FARM as he also uses his dairy cows with Browne's Dairy.
