Newsletter Term 2 Week 5
St Patrick's School Masterton 31st May 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora koutou,
It was wonderful to be part of the celebration on Sunday as ten children from St. Patrick's School celebrated their First Eucharist/ Communion. We were blessed with wonderful whanau support and the day was one that the children will always remember. Thanks to the support of all the families, Fr Bruce and the wonderful staff of St. Patrick's School. Special thanks go to our DRS, Chris Connor, for her wonderful leadership and organisation throughout the entire Sacramental Programme.
Congratulations Jazlyn, Tomas, Aiden, Charli, Mea-Aloha, Lucas, Praise, Ashlyn, Thea & Elyse.
This week at school we are celebrating Samoan Language week. The theme for this year is ‘Continue the Voyage with Competent Wayfinders of the Ocean - Fa’aāuāu le Folauga i le Va’a o Tautai’ - The theme recognises the importance of having the right tools, good leadership skills, relationships, and the correct medium (va’a) that is adaptable to faring the ocean and its elements.
Some interesting facts about this week include:
This year marks 12 years since Samoa Language Week has been celebrated in Aotearoa New Zealand.
2022 is also a significant year for the Samoan community, being the 60th anniversary of Samoa Independence. Sāmoa, officially the Independent State of Sāmoa, gained independence from NZ on 1st January 1962, which is celebrated on 1st June as its independence day.
Samoa has a unique historical relationship with NZ. It is the only nation that NZ has a Treaty of Friendship. The Treaty of Friendship between Samoa and New Zealand is about a commitment to partnership, friendship and a mutual endeavour to obtain for Tagata Sāmoa (Samoan peoples) fuller opportunities for social progress. Language is critical in achieving this.
Last week children in Hub 1 enjoyed taking part in a dog safety session run by staff from the Masterton District Council. The children learnt key lessons that included:
Don't approach a dog that has no owner with it
Always ask the owner if you can pat their dog
If you are allowed to pat a dog, then pat it on its chest not head
Don't run away from dogs as they may chase you, instead you should stand still quietly
A copy of the 2021 St Patrick’s School Annual Report can now be accessed via our school website. The report includes the board’s annual financial statements and auditors' report as well as progress the school has made towards the planned goals and targets from the 2021 school charter. Please follow this link to access the report.
Soon, schools across New Zealand will be advertising for members of local communities to put their hands up to become members of school boards of trustees. This will also be the case for us here at St Patrick’s School. If you would like to learn more about what this role entails you can follow this link to a website with lots of information. Our school website also shows the current list of our trustees and some of you may like to take the opportunity to ask them questions about their role and the board’s work.

Luke 24:46-53
46 and said to them, “This is what is written: the Messiah must suffer and must rise from death three days later, 47 and in his name the message about repentance and the forgiveness of sins must be preached to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And I myself will send upon you what my Father has promised. But you must wait in the city until the power from above comes down upon you.”
Jesus Is Taken Up to Heaven
50 Then he led them out of the city as far as Bethany, where he raised his hands and blessed them. 51 As he was blessing them, he departed from them and was taken up into heaven.[a] 52 They worshiped him and went back into Jerusalem, filled with great joy, 53 and spent all their time in the Temple giving thanks to God.
