Lifelines: A Comprehensive Suicide Awareness and Responsiveness Program for Teens
On Thursday, February 22nd at 6:00pm, Trexler will be hosting an optional 8th grade parent meeting to discuss the Lifelines curriculum that will be implemented with our current 8th grade students. Lifelines is a comprehensive program that educates school administrators, faculty and staff, parents and guardians, and students on the facts regarding the prevention of youth suicide.
The Lifelines program is designed to promote a caring, competent school community in which help-seeking behaviors are encouraged and modeled and suicidal behavior is recognized as an issue that cannot be kept secret. Lifelines seeks to increase the likelihood that school staff and students will know how to identify at-risk youth when they encounter them, provide an appropriate initial response, and obtain help, as well as be inclined to take such action. Additionally, troubled adolescents are aware of and have immediate access to helping resources and are encouraged to seek such help as an alternative to suicidal actions. Lifelines is included in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices.
The Onslow County School System believes that it is very important that students receive the information that will be presented through the Lifelines program and the program is being implemented at each middle school in the eighth grade. At the same time, we realize that this is a very sensitive topic and some parents/guardians do not want their children to discuss youth suicide in a classroom setting. We encourage parents to attend this informational meeting to learn more about the program.

Laundry Pods Not Permitted
Trexler is experiencing an increase in students bringing laundry detergent pods to school. A bizarre new trend dubbed the “Tide Pod Challenge” is gaining popularity among teens and young adults on social media. The challenge involves individuals ingesting the small laundry detergent pods and posting videos of themselves chewing and gagging on the oozing product online. These laundry detergent packs contain ethanol, polymers, and hydrogen peroxide which can burn the mouth, digestive system and stomach. According to the Poison Control Center, ingestion of laundry detergent pods can lead to coughing, choking, difficulty breathing, coma, and possibly death.
Trexler would like to remind parents and students that these products have no place in the educational setting, and students that are found to possess such items may be subject to disciplinary action. As a safety precaution, please talk with your child about the dangers of this challenge.
If you or someone you know ingests a laundry pod, or any potentially toxic substance, call the national poison help hotline at 1-800-222-1222 for free, confidential, expert medical advice. Text "POISON" TO 797979 to save the poison control contact information in your smartphone.
All County Chorus
Trexler Middle School was well represented by several students (pictured below) at the 2018 All County Honors Chorus on February 9th and 10th. These singers joined voices with other students from around the county to present a concert on Saturday afternoon under the direction of Mrs. Sonja Williams. Ms. Andrews would like to thank the Trexler All County Honors Chorus members for their outstanding participation and performance. Additionally, Trexler would like to thank all parents and community members that attended the concert in support of our students.
