Health and Wellness
With pollen allergies flaring these past couple of weeks, it seems fitting that May is Allergy and Asthma Awareness Month. This month, many organizations are highlighting allergies and asthma including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.
Below are some tips on how to keep your allergies in check from Allergy and Asthma Today’s spring issue:
- Check pollen counts daily and limit your time outside when pollen count is high
- At home, keep windows closed to keep the pollen from coming indoors
- Once indoors, remove pollen from your body by removing shoes, changing clothes, and bathing before going to bed and washing or brushing hair before sleep to keep pollen off of pillows.
Learn all about common asthma triggers and receive tips on how to reduce triggers in your home from Cincinnati Children’s hospital:
- Do not allow smoke in your home, car or around your child.
- Place your child's mattress, pillow and box springs in dust mite / allergy-free covers that close with a zipper.
- Wash blankets and bedding once a week in hot water and vacuum carpet weekly while your child is not in the room.
- Avoid strong odors such as perfume, hairspray, paints and cleaning products.
- Make sure your child avoid hard work or play outside when pollution or pollen levels are high.
For more information, feel free to review the websites listed aboce. Please consult Nurse Wyrick (wyrickd@sycamoreschools.org) and/or your health care provider with any questions you may have about allergies or asthma. Once allergies abate, hope you are able to get out and enjoy the glorious weather!
