21 Sports ... 1 Team ... WE ARE HOBART!
For some reason, Mother Nature has brought back some frigid temps over the last 7 days. Fortunately for Hobart fans, the Brickies have been HEATING THINGS UP this spring! Baseball & Softball are BOTH ranked in the top 10 ... Golf is UNDEFEATED ... and Tennis & Track are showing improvement EVERY WEEK!! In case you haven't quite caught the excitement of spring sports, here's something that might help ...
Playin' in the street gonna be a big man some day
You got mud on yo' face
You big disgrace
Kickin' your can all over the place
Singin'
WE WILL ... WE WILL ... ROCK YOU!
WE WILL ... WE WILL ... ROCK YOU!
Ok, now that we're all pumped up ... it's time for BricksCenter!
Track & Field
Run ... Jump ... Throw ... seems simple doesn't it? Fortunately for Hobart fans, our Brickie track athletes are making it look easy! These kids are showing drastic improvement on a weekly basis ... or as was the case this week, on a DAY-to-DAY basis!
Tuesday, Hobart opened Northwest Crossroads Conference competition by hosting arch rival Andrean in a coed dual meet. On Saturday, Hobart hosted the 80th annual Little 5 Track Meet ... and it's actually not so "Little" anymore. There were 15 teams competing (8 girls & 7 Boys) at the Brickyard and OUR BRICKS SHINED!! In the team competition, our girls placed 4th overall behind KV (team champion), Valparaiso and South Bend St. Joe ... and our boys were 2nd - bested by South Bend St. Joe, who piled up 175 points to claim their 2nd title in a row.
Individually, the Brickies had some TREMENDOUS performances!
For the girls, Senior Anisha Lewis took 3rd in the 200 and 4th in the 100, sophomore Sarah Romeo placed 5th the 400 in a season best time of 1:06.75, freshman Cailey Weber was 3rd in the 300m hurdles, junior Shanena Knight finished 4th in the shot and teammate Anna Wood followed suit in the disc, sophomore Daeges Morgan was 5th in the high jump and the 4x400m relay team was 4th in the 8-team field!
On the boys side, senior Bruce Leipart WON the 800 in 2:06.74 and took 2nd in the mile, freshman Ryan Mattel was right behind Leipart placing 2nd in the 800 and 3rd in the mile, freshman Jacob Ramirez finished 2nd in the 400 and senior Julian Ruiz was 5th, sophomore Diego Verduzco placed 2nd in the discus throw and 5th in the shot put ... classmate Hunter Juris finished 5th in the disc, sophomore Gavin Miller-Lane was 4th in the long jump and tied junior Ethan Ferba in the high jump for 3rd, and Hobart swept the top two spots in the pole vault with the Johnston brothers, Riley & Cody, going 1-2!!
With the NCC Championships about 3 and a half weeks away, Hobart is looking better and better with some solid depth AND some big scoring front-runners in multiple events! Both boys and girls should be in the hunt for a FANTASTIC finish and this post-season should be EXCITING!

Softball
On Monday, Hobart headed over to Michigan City to face Marquette Catholic. The last time these two schools squared off, senior Saylem Smith (a sophomore at the time) struck out a SCHOOL RECORD 18 batters! This time, senior Alyssa Peterson took the mound and combined with sophomore Kylee Watts to strike out 9 batters in the easy 14-0 VICTORY! Smith and classmates Neely Fisk and Sarah Joswiak all doubled to help the Lady Brickies pick up their 4th win of the season!
Wednesday, the #8-ranked Lady Brickies welcomed area #10-ranked Highland for their Northwest Crossroads Conference opener. After a scoreless top half of the 1st inning, senior Hannah Camarena led off the bottom with a BOMB to left-center field that cleared the fence and gave Hobart an early 1-0 lead! Over the next 4 innings, Highland scored 5 unanswered runs and heading into the bottom half of the 6th, our girls trailed 5-1 ... but HERE COME THE BRICKS! Freshman Keirys Click BELTED a 2-run HOMER to left to cut the lead down to 5-3! Then ... with 2 outs and nobody on ... Peterson CRUSHED a solo-shot that left the yard in a hurry and all of sudden the Lady Brickies were only down 1! Unfortunately, that's as close as Hobart would get as the Trojans added an "insurance" run in the top half of the 7th and left town with 6-4 win. Camarena and Click had two hits each at the plate ... sophomore Alyssa Janik and senior Alejandra Arauz doubled in this NCC showdown.
On Thursday, our girls took a short trip across County Line Rd to face off against Wheeler and when they returned, only "heeler" was left on the school sign because we came back with a "W"! This time, freshman Morgan Ellenberger was LIGHTS OUT on the bump as she struck out 8 in the complete game shutout! Obviously, her teammates backed her up with some tough D-D-D-DEFENSE in the 6-0 victory! In the batter's box, Janik BLASTED two that haven't landed yet and Camarena hit her 5th homerun of the season! Smith also had 2 hits to help the Lady Brickies bounce back after Wednesday's loss!
Friday night, the Lady Brickies traveled over to 5959 Broadway for another NCC SHOWDOWN ... this time against rival and #5-ranked Andrean. In another instant NCC CLASSIC, Watts doubled home the go-ahead run in the top of the 7th and Hobart hung on for a THRILLING 5-4 VICTORY!! Camarena pitched the entire game and not only struck out 8 batters to earn the win, but also went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI! Junior Sydney Belk had 3 hits and scored twice as our girls won their 3rd game of the week and evened up their NCC record at 1-1!!
The Lady Brickies are currently 6-3 on the season and 1-1 in NCC play! This week will be another grinder for Hobart with 5 games in 6 days. WE ... WE BELIEVE ... WE BELIEVE THAT ... you know the rest :).

Boys Golf
Senior Chad Tomaga led the Brickies with a team-best 48 over 9 holes at River Pointe. Classmates Logan Kingery and Carter Mohr were next with each scoring a 52, freshman Parker Glass finished with 53 and junior Ethan Cover rounded out Hobart's top 5 with a 59.
This was Hobart's first dual meet this spring after hosting the Brickie Scramble a week ago ... and after securing the 15-stroke victory, the Brickies are 1-0! Na-na-na-na-na-na-na

Baseball
On Monday, Hobart hosted the Red Devils in the Northwest Crossroads Conference opener for both schools. In 1961, The Shirelles reminded us that "momma said there'd be days like this". Unfortunately for our Brickies, those words held true as Lowell came out swinging, scored at least 3 runs or more in every inning, and left town smiling after defeating our boys 19-3. Freshman Jevan Andrews and sophomore Kyle Feterick were the only two Brickies to hit safely in only our 2nd loss of the season.
On Tuesday, the Brickies traveled south on I-65 for a rematch ... only this time, the tables were turned as Hobart registered 6 hits, swiped 7 total bases, and scored 8 runs to "return the favor" and defeat the Devils on their own turf 8-4! At the plate, senior Jaden Deel doubled, scored twice and recorded an RBI and junior teammate Marc Enslen had 2 hits, 2 stolen bases, and an RBI. On the mound, sophomore Cam Gonzalez was MASTERFUL in his approach as he only allowed 1 run over 5 innings while striking out 8 batters to earn the "W"!
Saturday's match-up featured Hobart again on the road ... this time at Michigan City. The Brickies scored 1 in the top of the 1st ... broke the game open with 4 BIG RUNS in the top of the 2nd ... and CRUISED to an easy 9-1 VICTORY!! Our boys showed GREAT POISE at the plate as they drew 9 walks on the day and senior Gavin Gallagher picked up his 3rd pitching win of the season!
Hobart is currently sitting at an IMPRESSIVE 8-2 on the year and 1-1 in NCC play! The #6-ranked Munster Mustangs visit The Friendly Confines on Monday to face our #10-ranked Brickies. Don't stop now boys!!

Girls Tennis
It was a BUSY week of play for the Lady Brickies with a home match on Monday ... road matches Wednesday & Thursday ... and on Saturday, the 8th annual Hobart Invite!
On Monday, Hobart went toe-to-toe with NWI powerhouse Crown Point, but the Lady Brickies had trouble getting the Bulldogs to roll-over and we lost a tough one 0-5. Senior Addison Kasch gave a terrific effort in her 3 set marathon against CP's best at #1 singles and all of our girls showed improvement over last week's opener against Valpo.
Wednesday, the Lady Brickies traveled to our neighbor to the North, Lake Station. After opening the season with hard fought losses against Valpo and Crown Point, our girls BLASTED the Lady Eagles 5-0! In fact, Hobart only lost 2 games the ENTIRE NIGHT! WHAT A PERFORMANCE!!
On Thursday, Hobart headed South to open NCC play against the KV Kougars. This one was CRAZY!! Kasch and junior Emma Novak each won EASY at #1 & #2 singles 6-0, 6-0. The Kougars fought back to earn victories at #3 singles and #1 doubles to tie it up at 2-2. The #2 doubles team of senior Hayley Borman and junior Aoife Combs were LOCKED in a BATTLE for the final point of the match! The two teams split the 1st two sets by identical scores, 6-3 ... which means TIE-BREAKER TIME! In the 3rd and deciding set, all competitors gave it their all and left it on the court! Unfortunately, the Kougars managed to find just enough points to edge the Lady Brickies 7-5 to win the overall match 3-2. It wasn't the final outcome we were hoping for, but true victory is found in giving the total effort, not in watching the scoreboard. Coach Walsh was VERY PROUD of our girls for how they BATTLED the entire night stating, "It was a great match! The girls fought for every point!". Well said coach.
These young ladies are WORK WORK WORKING hard, showing improvement, and SERVING notice that Hobart will be a force to be reckoned with when sectional play begins in a month! Keep up the GREAT work ladies!
