Tewksbury Elementary Updates
From the Desk of the Principal
Dear TES Families,
We had a wonderful response to our first Let Grow Project weekend! We had many different projects completed by our students, and the hope is that each time our children try something new, they gain more independence and a greater self-esteem. We encourage you to share ideas with other families of the projects your children have done each month via our school's community Let Grow Padlet so that next month your children can try something different!
This month we focus on the character trait of caring. Connected to this trait, we encourage all families to get involved in giving back to the community and talk to your children about the many ways we can care for one another. Several of our 5th grade students will be running a canned food drive to benefit our local food pantries. Your donation of canned goods is greatly appreciated! Their goal is to have each classroom collect 100 cans by the 100th day of school (Tuesday, February 16th), and they've set a school-wide goal of 1,500 cans. We encourage all families to gather up your cans this weekend to give to a great cause! Take a look at the wonderful video below produced by two of our 5th grade students, Katie and Sara, about this effort!
Sincerely,
Katie Lemerich
Principal

Take a look at our "Let Grow" display that we are beginning to fill at TES! We'll do another school-wide Let Grow Project weekend February 27-28, 2021. We look forward to your child's participation. At the end of the year, their Lego pieces/projects will be entered into a raffle, and one student from each grade level will receive a Lego set, thanks to the generous support of our PTA!
February is Kindergarten Registration Month!
Join us for a virtual Family Trivia Night on Thursday, February 18th at 7:00 PM!
Hey, TES! Let's get reading!
Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Donovan
CARING is the character trait we will be exploring this month. It coincides with Valentine's Day and our Canned Food Drive, giving us two opportunities where we can demonstrate our Care / Kindness for others. We will be exploring how care and kindness enrich our home, schools and world. Opportunities to demonstrate care and kindness are all around. Enjoy this video and have a conversation about it with your family. It's a nice story of young people showing care and kindness. Does your family want to rise to the challenge? Click here for a kindness bingo board that can be done throughout the month of February!

Health Tips with Mrs. Page
The proper amount of sleep at night will help children stay focused, improve academic performance and help with concentration. It is important to talk to children about having their bodies rest and receive the growth that a good night's sleep will provide. It is also very important for an effectively functioning immune system.
The National Foundation of Sleep Medicine recommends the following amounts of sleep:
Preschoolers (3 - 5 years of age): 10 - 13 hours (inclusive of naps)
School-aged children: 9 - 12 hours per 24 hours
Good sleep habits that can improve your child’s sleep are:
- Going to bed at the same time every night, even on weekends
- Keeping the bedroom at a comfortable temperature, quiet, dark and as relaxing as possible
- Removing electronic devices from the bedroom such as phones, TVs and computers
- Avoiding large meals before bedtime
- Exercising during the day to help fall asleep easier
