Want to give a shout out?
We are inviting families to email Mr. Olson when their child(ren) have a successful experience outside of school. The celebration will then be included in the morning school wide announcement. Ideas of things that families might want announced: winning a soccer tournament, moving up to a new tae kwon do belt, participating in the regional science fair, etc. If you have something that you'd like us to recognize your child(ren) for, email tolson1@isd77.k12.mn.us:

How can families learn more about online issues impacting children?
Mankato's Project for Teens is presenting Parents, Teens, and Digital Relationships. The event is Monday, April 10, 2017 from 6:30–8:00 at South Central College in the Conference Center.
Description: Social media is at the fingertips of today’s youth. As a result, children are developing relationships in the digital realm, many of which are never realized in person. These online communications can result in sexting, cyber bullying, conflict with friends, and more.
- 92% of teens (ages 13–17) report going online daily
- 57% of teens have met at least one new friend online and a majority of these teens (77%) never meet these friends in person
- 64% of teens who have met a friend online say they met them via a social networking site
So how can parents help? This presentation includes a panel of local experts who will share experiences related to the realities and dangers of social media, as well as practical tips for parents and teens to use social media safety. We encourage parents to attend with their children, allowing them time to engage in dialogue about these situations.
PANEL
- Tom Rother, Detective, Mankato Department of Public Safety
- Casey Hardy, Assistant County Attorney, Blue Earth County
- Sherri Blasing, Assistant Principal, Mankato West High School
- Tracy Brovold, Media Director, ISD 77
- Molly Fox, Social Worker, ISD 77
- Project for Teens Students
Facilitated by Kate Cox, Project for Teens Coordinator and Clinical Social Worker at Mayo Clinic Health Systems

Why should I talk to my student about School Board Policy 501, section III, sub A3?
School Board Policy 501 describes how schools keep a safe environment free of weapons. Outlined in the policy are the obvious things that outside of school students are not allowed to use or only with adult supervision, but it also covers items that fit into the category of toys.
There is the potential for a problem if a student places a toy gun or rubber knife in the pocket of their coat and then brings it to school. It can be a confusing situation for students as something they have permission to use outside of school is forbidden at school.
Please take a few minutes to talk with your child about the importance of never bringing any of the items outlined in the policy to school.

What driving practices help keep students safe before & after school?
According to the National Safe Routes to School Program, adults can enhance safety near schools by following safe driving practices. Here is an edited list (I shortened it for speed of reading, but you can see the entire list here.)
- Slow down and obey all traffic laws and speed limits on streets and alleys in the school zones and adjacent neighborhoods.
- Comply with local school drop-off and pick-up procedures.
- Avoid double parking or stopping on crosswalks to let children out of the car.
- Avoid loading or unloading children at locations across the street from the school. .
- Watch for children walking or bicycling.
- Watch for children playing and gathering near bus stops or those who are late for the bus and may dart into the street.
- Watch for children walking or biking to school when backing up.
Thank you for helping to make sure that our children are safe.
What's new with PTO?
After a successful March with Teacher Potlucks and Book Fair, we're moving in to April planning for next year.
Potluck Thanks
Thank you to all those individuals who helped provide Potluck to teachers during conferences. The teachers loved the meals that were provided on the first two nights of conferences. Also, much thanks to Horace Mann Insurance Co. for donating a meal on the last night of conferences.
Book Fair Success
Thanks to all the families who bought books at our March 2017 Book Fair, we earned 65% of all sales in Scholastic Dollars and donated over $55 in books to the Franklin library. We earned over $2300 in Scholastic Dollars to spend on books and supplies for use throughout the school.
If you missed the Fair or want to shop an expanded selection of books, the Online Book Fair is still open through April 5. Franklin earns 65% of all online sales, too. All orders ship to Franklin Elementary for FREE by April 13. Shop at: www.scholastic.com/bf/franklinsoars (scroll down the page until you see shop now).
