Raleigh Hills Newsletter
November 22, 2019
Weekly Message
Dear Raleigh Hills Families and Community,
We have so much to celebrate and for which to be thankful! One of our newsletter goals is to give families a window into all of the amazing school wide learning opportunities that are happening at all grade levels. The interconnectedness amongst our students at different grade levels is so apparent.
There are a number of announcements this week. From early closure information to grants to Smarter Balance Testing updates, we are working to keep you all up to date! Please let us know if you have any questions.
In the beginning of the year, we were sending out the newsletter weekly, and now we will be transitioning to sending it out every other week. The next newsletter will be sent on December 6th. In the meantime, please let us know if you have any questions.
Warm regards,
Jennifer and Lindsay

Book Fair
A big thank you to friends and families for supporting the book fair. It is a fundraiser for our library. We raised almost $3000 in Scholastic dollars to purchase books with Scholastic for our library. Thank you to the many volunteers who helped set up and run the book fair. We couldn't do this without you. Erica Moore

4th Grade's Field Trip
A scientist told us how soil is made. We saw different types of trees. Deciduous trees lose their leaves. Conifer trees don't lose their leaves. We also got to go on a self-guided tour of the forest. We got to use binoculars and a magnifying glass. On one trail you could barely see a wasp's nest! We also got to see what a log that a beaver was chewing on looked like!
We hope everybody can go on such a great adventure!

6th Grade Healthy Snacks Workshop
Our health class wants to host a 3 day workshop meant to inspire and inform teenagers about preparing their own snacks. They'll get to make and enjoy quick pickles, smoothies, and fancy toast with the goal of gaining the knowledge to prepare snacks that are delicious, affordable, nutritious, and informed by sustainable practices. The cost is only $999 and we have a matching grant from New Seasons Market cutting the cost in half!
Every dollar counts and gets us closer to our goal. A donation of $5, $10, or $15 will have double the impact and we only have $310 more to go! Even if you cannot give right now, please share the project on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or whatever social media you are on. The farther and wider we can spread the project, the better for our school! Won’t you please help us and consider donating what you can and sharing with all your friends, families, and networks? We appreciate all you do for our school and helping our kids learn and grow!

Smarter Balanced State Test Update
Last spring, students in grades 3 – 8 and 11 in the Beaverton School District and throughout Oregon took the state tests (Smarter Balanced) in English Language Arts and Mathematics.
In addition to content standards, these assessments are designed to measure critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills. The test results provide you, our schools, our district and the state with information about how well we are preparing our students for their next steps including college and career readiness.
Our students will take these tests once between January and June 2020. House Bill 2655 permits parents and adult students to annually opt-out of Oregon’s statewide summative tests in English Language Arts and Math by submitting a form to the school the student attends. The school shall provide any student who is exempted from a state test with supervised study time while other students are testing.

Winter Warm Up
Holiday Giving!
It’s that time of year when we come together as a community to spread some holiday cheer! Over the next few weeks, we’ll be gathering items for holiday baskets to give families in our community a little extra boost during the winter season. Here’s how you can help:
Donate items to our Winter Warm Up Drive: From Dec. 3-13, we will be collecting NEW blankets, scarves, hats, gloves and socks (in adult and kid sizes) as well as snacks and treats to fill our holiday baskets. Donation boxes will be located on the stage in the cafeteria.
Donate a $25 WinCo or Fred Meyer gift card: Cards can be dropped off in the office or Krista Orchard’s mailbox.
Sponsor a Holiday Basket: If your family, neighborhood or workplace is interested in sponsoring a basket for a family, we can provide you with information and a list of items to shop for.
If you have questions about our holiday giving or would like to sponsor a basket, please contact Krista Orchard: (503) 356-2166 or krista_orchard@beaverton.k12.or.us

PTO Opportunities
I know email and Facebook may not be the preferred means of communication for a lot of people. I personally prefer text messaging. For all you volunteers who also prefer texting, here is how you can get on my text messaging list:
- Login to myimpactpage.com
- Under My Profile, choose Contact Information
- Scroll down to Mobile Email (under the heading Email Addresses)
- Click on "View Mobile Email Information here"
- Look up your phone provider and note the email given for your provider to receive mobile email (i.e. text messages)
- Go back to the My Profile/Contact Information/Mobile Email option and input that email using your phone number
- For example: If my phone number were 503-246-0110 and my provider is Verizon, I would input 5032460110@vtext.com
- Save
That's it! If you use the mobile app, login and click on the drop-down menu, then choose My Profile.
Thank you volunteers and have a very happy Thanksgiving!
