Instructional Information
We have two professional development days this week, agendas are linked below!
Instructional Strategy of the Week: Graffiti or Ready... Rotate!
Here's how it works...
This strategy involves students in responding to prompts or answering questions in pairs or small groups. It can be used for brainstorming or summarization. If using Graffiti, chart paper is posted around the room and students move from sheet to sheet in small groups. When you are using the Ready . . . Rotate version, the paper moves from table to table and the students don’t.
How To:
-
Using large sheets of chart paper create a different question, topic, issue, prompt or statement related to the concept being studied.
-
Students work in pairs or small groups of 3 or 4 to respond to each of the sheets.
-
Student groups can use different color markers to ensure that all answer all sheets and track contributions.
-
After a designated amount of time, the teacher signals for the group to move to a new sheet (Graffiti) or to pass the sheet to the next group (Ready...Rotate).
-
The goal is to have each group add a unique response to each sheet so that many ideas are represented.
Other Uses:
-
The charts can be used as an introduction to a topic to access students’ prior knowledge or misconceptions.
-
It can serve as a review of a lesson or unit as well as a brainstorm of ideas.
-
Students can be asked to create non-linguistic representations in addition to words.

Kudos Cougars
From Mrs.Spicer to Mr. Gillingham: That time my son came home and said he was moved to a new seat BECAUSE he was a good kid! He’s always been stuck next to the naughty ones because he doesn’t engage. For him to come home excited because he has a seat where he can learn uninterrupted is awesome. Also, great track coach! Rain or shine, encouraging those kiddos to do their best! Thanks!
From Ms.Mackey to CMMS Staff: I would like to thank all the staff here at CMMS for welcoming me so warmly. A special thanks to Coleen for all the extra help she has given me as I settle in. I wish I could have moved over here sooner THANK YOU ALL!!!
From Mrs. Fosdeck to Mrs. Lathrom & Mrs. Booth: I'm so thrilled to be working with such outstanding, creative, kind teammates in the library!
From Mr. Reid to Mr. Womack: Thank you for your dedication to all students! Your relentless efforts to hold ALL students accountable to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for ALL students is to be commended.
From Mr. Reid to Mrs. Corpuz: Thank you for helping me acclimate to Cougar Mountain. As a new staff member, I feel welcome and a part of the family. Thank you for creating an environment where this happens so easily.
From Mrs. Corpuz to Ms. Goldsberry: Thank you for going above and beyond each and every day in the nurse's office, you impress me each day with your positive attitude, willingness to learn and flexibility while we are without a nurse!

Restorative Practices
Reminder: We want to work WITH students to RESTORE our Relationships by providing authoritative discipline. "This style is characterized by high responsiveness and high demands (THE WARM DEMANDER). Authoritative relationships are responsive to the child's emotional needs while having high standards. They set limits and are very consistent in enforcing boundaries."
Review the four quadrants social discipline window below, and reflect on your current practice in your classroom. How can you shift to a more restorative approach to discipline?
Below is a snap shot of our discipline data from the beginning of school until now.

Student-Led Conferences - Please Read Carefully!
This week your students will continue to create their slideshow for SLCs in advisory. It is very important that your students stay on track. Linked below is the data grid for many of the required slide show information. Also linked is the conference invitation and conference time slot list. All advisory teachers will need to make a copy and edit to match your preference of times, print the invite and give out to your advisory students. If you choose to use another way to sign up such as an online format, go for it! Please make every effort to host PM time slots for those families that cannot make it during the day. If you work late on Wednesday the 30th you get to leave early on Friday. You'll notice the expectation is for students to turn this form into you by October 16th, this is so you have time to schedule and make the conference post cards that will need to be mailed no later than Wednesday, October 23rd. You will also need to give your conference schedule to Brenda by October 23rd as well so she can field the phone calls and answer parent questions. As soon as print shop gets the post cards and rubrics to us they will be placed in your boxes. I have also linked the same information sent in last week's email below as well. Grade level and curriculum leaders, please check in with our new team members to make sure they are fully in the know of what to do and how to do it.
