Why Your Doctor Should Care About Social Justice
But looking back, she regrets not sounding the alarm for the real problem: the structural inequities embedded in the world's political and economic organizations, inequities that make marginalized people more vulnerable.
These same structural problems exist in the United States today, and as New York City's Health Commissioner, Bassett is using every chance she has to rally support for health equity and speak out against racism. "We don't have to have all the answers to call for change," she says. "We just need courage."
Accepting Veteran's Choice Insurance
The Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act (VACAA) of 2014, directs the establishment of the Veterans Choice Program to better meet the health care needs of our nation's Veterans. Under this program, eligible Veterans can obtain approved care in their community.
What is the Choice Program?
If you are already enrolled in VA health care, the Choice Program allows you to receive health care within your community. Using this program does NOT impact your existing VA health care, or any other VA benefit.
Call Traditional Roots Healthcare today to schedule an appointment using your insurance.
Strategies to Help Balance Your Thyroid
The thyroid gland is small, yet it has a mighty impact on every cell in your body. It secretes hormones that influence metabolism, bone growth, temperature regulation, mental clarity, and more.
Thyroid dysfunction is extremely common—experienced by approximately 20 million Americans. Many cases go undiagnosed. Symptoms can range from fatigue and weight gain (from an underactive thyroid) to irritability and insomnia (from an overactive thyroid).
Thyroid dysfunction can contribute to conditions such as infertility and autoimmune disease. Doctors frequently prescribe medications for thyroid disorders, but there are also lifestyle and nutritional remedies that can help. Here are five ways to balance your thyroid, but make sure to work with your doctor to determine the best approach for you.
Manage Your Stress
Stress contributes to a plethora of health-related challenges, so it may come as no surprise that it can negatively affect your thyroid, too. Stress may be a contributing factor to the onset of thyroid autoimmune disorders, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Grave’s disease. Take the time to breath, pursue a fun hobby, or meditate—it could go a long way in protecting your thyroid.
Exercise Regularly
Exercise not only helps regulate your thyroid by decreasing stress levels—it can also stimulate the secretion of thyroid hormones and increase tissue sensitivity to the hormones. A study published in Neuroendocrinology Letters showed that moderate-intensity exercise (reaching a 70 percent maximum heart rate) and high-intensity exercise (reaching a 90 percent maximum heart rate) can increase the levels of circulating thyroid hormones in your body. You can calculate your maximum heart rate (the highest rate your heart beats per minute) by subtracting your age from 220.
Increase Specific Nutrients
Vitamins and minerals that are important for thyroid hormone production and utilization include iodine, selenium, zinc, and A, E, C, and B vitamins. The following foods are high in these nutrients.
- Iodine: Seaweed, shrimp, salmon, sardines, oysters, eggs
- Selenium: Brazil nuts, seafood, organ meat
- Zinc: Oysters, ginger root, brazil nuts, almonds, walnuts, sardines
- Vitamin A: Leafy greens, cantaloupe, nectarines, peaches, cod liver oil (Note: Orange and yellow vegetables like carrots contain an important precursor to vitamin A.)
- Vitamin E: Peanuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, olive oil, wheat-germ
- Vitamin C: Citrus fruits, strawberries, leafy greens, red chili pepper
- Vitamin B2: Brewer’s yeast, eggs, organ meat, milk, green vegetables
- Vitamin B3: Brewer’s yeast, salmon, tuna, chicken, liver, mushrooms
- Vitamin B6: Brewer’s yeast, sunflower seeds, wheat germ, tuna, salmon, liver
Whole foods are the optimal choice, but supplements can also help boost vitamin and mineral intake if your levels are extremely depleted. Check with your doctor before starting any new supplement.
A note on iodine: While iodine is imperative for thyroid function, consuming too much of it can actually inhibit your thyroid. Be careful if you’re eating foods high in iodine in addition to supplementing with iodine—which is often included in a multivitamin.
Setting Powerful Intentions
Intention is the starting point of every dream. It is the creative power that fulfills all of our needs, whether for money, relationships, spiritual awakening, or love.
An intention is a directed impulse of consciousness that contains the seed form of that which you aim to create. Like real seeds, intentions can’t grow if you hold on to them. Only when you release your intentions into the fertile depths of your consciousness can they grow and flourish.
1. Mindfulness and meditation
Most of the time our mind is caught up in thoughts, emotions, and memories. One of the most effective tools we have for entering the gap is meditation. Meditation takes you beyond the ego-mind into the silence and stillness of pure consciousness. This is the ideal state in which to plant your seeds of intention
2. Release Your Intentions and Desires
Once you’re established in a state of restful awareness, release your intentions and desires. The best time to plant your intentions is during the period after meditation, while your awareness remains centered in the quiet field of all possibilities. After you set an intention, let it go—simply stop thinking about it. Continue this process for a few minutes after your meditation period each day.
3. Remain Centered in a State of Restful Awareness
Intention is much more powerful when it comes from a place of contentment than if it arises from a sense of lack or need. Stay centered and refuse to be influenced by other people’s doubts or criticisms. Your higher self knows that everything is all right and will be all right, even without knowing the timing or the details of what will happen.
4. Detach from the Outcome
Relinquish your rigid attachment to a specific result and live in the wisdom of uncertainty. Attachment is based on fear and insecurity, while detachment is based on the unquestioning belief in the power of your true Self. Intend for everything to work out as it should, then let go and allow opportunities and openings to come your way.
5. Let the Universe Handle the Details
Your focused intentions set the infinite organizing power of the universe in motion. Trust that infinite organizing power to orchestrate the complete fulfillment of your desires. Don’t listen to the voice that says that you have to be in charge, that obsessive vigilance is the only way to get anything done. The outcome that you try so hard to force may not be as good for you as the one that comes naturally. You have released your intentions into the fertile ground of pure potentiality, and they will bloom when the season is right.
New Moon Booze Infusion
Set your intention for spring at our New Moon Booze Infusion and learn how to infuse wine and liquor with medicinal herbs.
New moon rituals bring meaning to our lives by "charging" an intention with power. We're always setting intentions, and this is a way to do it in a more conscious way. There is power in coming up with visions for your life, and keeping them in your sights as they come into being.
In this class we will:
~ Infuse wine and liquor with medical herbs
~ Provide recipes for other useful infusions
~ Set an intention for spring and how this ties to the element Wood in Chinese Medicine
