Mr. Corso's Principal's Message
Positive Raiders: Responsible, Respectful, Hard Working and Kind
Back to School Night
During homeroom this week, students did an activity to fill out their class schedule for Back to School Night. Please ask them if they have that for you. The handout includes the times, locations (different for each student - dependent on their schedule) and a map of our campus. There is a 6th Grade Camp presentation in the MPR at 5 p.m. for 6th grade parents. The Principal’s Message is also in the MPR is for all families and begins at 6pm. We look forward to seeing you at Back to School Night!
This Week’s Positive Message: I read the following to our school on the morning announcements… “You may have seen on our marquee and in the quad, signs that state the Home Field Advantage. You may have asked yourself, what is that? The Home Field Advantage is when each and every Raider feels safe and part of a community where they are supported, empowered and united. We want each student, staff member and family member to feel the Home Field Advantage at Black Mountain Middle School. You can see the Home Field Advantage in many different ways. It could be saying hello to someone in the halls, knowing people’s names, being kind, encouraging others or maybe just even giving someone a smile. Each and everyone of us helps create the Home Field Advantage. We hope you feel it and we hope you help make others feel it too.”
Power Hour starts September 3: Power Hour is an opportunity for students to get extra help and time after school for specific subjects Monday - Thursday. We offer Math Workshops that are designed specifically to support the lessons being taught in math that week. We offer time students can meet with a Humanities (English/Social Studies) teacher for extra help. Finally, students can go to the library for a study hall. Here is a LINK to the Power Hour Schedule on our website.
School Site Council: Parent voice is a very important component in reviewing school wide goals, achievements and future initiatives! At middle school, we are required to have three parent representatives on our School Site Council (SSC) which reviews and recommends our school’s Single Plan for Student Achievement. Additional members include teachers, students, administrators and classified staff. Our SSC meets after-school, typically for an hour or less and not more than five times per school year. Currently, we have two dedicated parents who have graciously agreed to serve for their second year on our SSC, but we need one more parent to offer to serve in this special role for this school year. If you’d be willing to volunteer to serve our school in this capacity, please email Jo Ann Cooper, Asst. Principal at jcooper@powayusd.com
School Safety Committee: Every year a team of teachers, staff, parents and our school resource officer come together as a committee with the goal of ensuring constant analysis and improvement of our safety plan here at BMMS. This year our meetings will be held after school, 3pm - 4pm. We are looking for 3 parents to join our efforts. If you are interested, please email Assistant Principal, Kelly Stine at kstine@powayusd.com.
Snakes/Bee Aware: Because BMMS is located in a unique habitat, there are snakes, some dangerous ones, in our neighborhood and occasionally on our campus. We have trimmed many of hedges to limit areas snakes like to hide. Students need to use situational awareness, to ensure their safety. If they see something, they need to say something to an adult.
We have been seeing a large amount of bees on campus. If students find themselves in an area with bees, they should walk away calmly. They should choose to eat away from the garbage cans, and should not purposefully bother the bees. A little common sense and situational awareness can make all of our students safer on campus.
See you at Back to School Night!
