PTA Family Bingo Night
Written by Annie Standeford
Did you go to the bingo night at Siegrist? The PTA put it on and they did a phenomenal job! At bingo night they did a raffle and a silent auction. Winners of Bingo games were rewarded with a choice of a gift card from different places. The amazing thing about it is that you could win multiple times to get multiple prizes. PTA had a refreshment table with candy bars, pizza, snacks and sodas! The bingo night was a fundraiser so that all of your kids can go on field trips. The school gives thanks to all the PTA members who helped put on Bingo night. We all had a great time. See you next year at bingo night.
Snowman Clothing Drive!
By. Eleanor Schlesinger
The snowman clothing drive is a yearly event where Siegrist students fill bags with donated clothes and use the bags to create a snowman in the entrance hallway. The event originally spanned from January 8-19, but due to loss of school days weather snowy weather, the deadline was extended through the 24th. Each day had a theme and different items to donate. Day one’s theme was wear silly socks and donating socks. Day two was to donate children's underwear and the theme was wear your clothes inside out! Day three was to donate hats and scarves and wear a scarf or sweater. Day four of the event was to donate gloves and mittens and to wear red hearts. The final event day’s donation was to donate stocking hats and wear a silly hat! Some of the clothes will be donated to the treasure chest and some to the City Union Mission. This year we collected enough donations to build two snowmen! The newspaper team named this year’s snowmen Rashee and Taylor! Since this is a yearly event, will you donate next year?

by Elise DeLashmutt
Where did fourth grade go for their field trip and what did they learn? Let's find out! For the 4th grade field trip students went to the Platte City YMCA. On the first day Mrs. Phillips, Mrs. Marrs and Mrs. McCarthy's class went. On the second day Mrs. Villarreal’s class and Mrs. Schmidt's class went. The 4th graders went on this field trip to learn about water safety procedures and CPR. They also got to do fun stuff like jump off the diving board and free swim in the lazy river. Groundhog's Day
by Elise DeLashmutt
Groundhog's day is the day when people look at the famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil. If it sees its shadow that determines the weather for the next six weeks. The very first Groundhog Day celebration was hosted on February 2, 1877. Groundhog's day has always been on February 2nd since 1877. Groundhog's day is a tradition celebrated in the United States. Groundhog's day is not a federal holiday as it is basically just for fun and for weather forecasters entertainment!!! The 1993 Groundhog Day movie starring Bill Murray took place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Did you know that Clymer Freas started Groundhog's Day?! Thank you for reading!!!
Groundhog’s Day
by Conrad Kearns
Do you know what Groundhog’s Day is? It is when the groundhog comes out, and we wait to see if it sees its shadow. If the groundhog sees his shadow we have 6 more weeks of winter, but if he does not see his shadow that means spring is on its way. So let’s ask some students in Mrs. Phillip's class if they want the groundhog to see its shadow or not. Elise said, “ No, because I want it to be warm." Brynlyn also said, “No, because she wants the warm spring weather to be here." Bu Maddi from Mrs. Marrs’ said, “Yes!" I guess she loves the cold winter months and wants them to last longer.

But, in total, she’s been a social worker for twenty-nine years, at many different locations: such as in Leavenworth, Kansas City, and at a foster care system in Kansas. When she was in high school, she worked in a box office at Sandstone Amphitheater and for the Renaissance Fair! Some of her other jobs were as an umpire, a cashier, and a scorekeeper! Some of her hobbies are reading, hiking, and riding in the car with her kids while listening to music! Her favorite part about working at Siegrist Elementary is working with kids and families. She says, “Siegrist feels like an extension of my family, you feel the love we have for our students as soon as you walk in the building!” SO next time you see her, tell her how amazing she is!

Ingredients for Tomato Soup:
1 cup chopped onion
3 cloves garlic, crushed
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 28-ounce can whole tomatoes
1/2 to 3/4 cup cream
Small bunch fresh basil, chopped
Salt and pepper to taste
1 cup Cheddar cheese cubes, optional
Heat the olive oil over medium heat in a soup pot. Once hot, add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft, about 10 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 1 more minute. Turn off the heat. (You might need to ask a grown up for help.)
Blend the whole tomatoes and all the juices in a blender. Add the cooked onion and garlic, and blend until smooth.
Carefully pour the pureed tomatoes into the soup pot. Turn the heat to medium-high.
Stir in the cream and cook for about 10 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste and extra cream, if you'd like.
Ladle the soup into bowls. Stir in cubes of Cheddar cheese, if you'd like. Top with chopped fresh basil and pass the salt and pepper!
Winter Fun Facts
Winter Foxes
By Alexis Hurst
Do you know who loves the snow? Snow foxes love the snow. Let's learn about arctic foxes together.
Arctic foxes live in the tundra, places like Alaska, Canada, and north pole like Santa Claus and penguins.
Arctic foxes love the snow so much they use their thick fur to keep warm.
They also live in dens in cliffs with small family packs.
The male parent stays with the cubs and helps take care of them.
Oh no, don't try to snuggle. I am a wild animal and should be treated like that!
They eat fish, small mammals, and leftover bear food.
They can also hunt for rats and other small animals.
And they also are white like polar bears to blend in with the snow.
A Snowflake's Journey to the Ground
By: Emerson Ellsworth
A snowflake! Some of us love it, some don’t. But, how does it get to the ground to begin with? Does it just, POOF... show up? Nope! Its long journey to the ground is a story to tell. It starts like rain in a cloud. Just chillin’ until it gets below 32 degrees. It freezes. Now, it’s a snowflake. Basically, it is ice water. Now, when it rains, it's all snow. As it travels through the sky, it takes time before the ground gets cold enough to make the snow stick! That’s called accumulation! When it gets cold enough, the snow piles on the ground, and there is more, and more, and even more! Of course, it depends on where you are, because if you are in Florida, you probably wouldn't get that much snow. Well, next time it snows, make sure to have fun every minute of a snow day! It takes a while to show up.
Arctic Hare
by Jackson Fain
You may mistake an arctic hare as just a big fluffy rabbit. Arctic hares live in cold tundra areas like Canadian mountains and snowy plains. The Arctic hares needs to rest sometimes because they’re always on the move, so when they rest they burrow down into the snow to sleep. Arctic hares eat moss lichen and grass, but they also eat some things like roots, leaves and berries. Female Arctic hares give birth to what's called a leveret; most give birth to four to eight leverets in a litter they usually live 1 year.
