NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED TEACHER
Congratulations to Sra. Sara Wyffels, CHS Spanish Teacher, for earning National Board Certification, the most respected professional certification available in K-12 education. The multi-year certification process requires that teachers demonstrate standards-based evidence of the positive effect they have on student learning. They must exhibit a deep understanding of their students, content knowledge, use of data and assessments and teaching practice. They must also show that they participate in learning communities and provide evidence of ongoing reflection and continuous learning.
POSITIVE REFERRAL WINNERS
Congratulations to this semester’s positive referral winners: Isabela Glass (Chromebook), Cristian Valle (Kindle Fire), and Yin YingZhi (Kindle Fire)! These three were drawn from over 115 positive referrals written this semester for students showing great character.
ENGLISH TEACHER PRESENTS AT NATIONAL CONFERENCE
Mrs. Cathy Jones, CHS IB Language and Literature 12 Teacher, partnered with Dr. Maria Goff from California State University, Fresno, to present Teaching Analysis of Media Texts to Foster Student Voice and Engagement at the 2017 National Council of Teachers of English Conference. As part of Dr. Goff’s research, Mrs. Jones developed inquiry and lessons so her students were not limited to texts from the literary canon. By using multiple forms of media texts, Mrs. Jones created a classroom environment that allowed students to inquire into issues of representation and voice in the media - issues in which the students felt a personal connection.
WINTER WEEK RECAP
Last week, CHS celebrated Winter Week with spirit days and lunch-time activities. Congratulations to Gunner Garcia for winning the Ugly Sweater contest and Mrs. Delatorre’s homeroom for winning the door decorating contest. Orchestra “flash mobbed” the courtyard and played music during lunchtime, and students decorated cookies and took pictures with Santa. The highlight of the week for StuCo was the first ever Holiday play day with the CHS daycare kids where a snow slide was brought in. Thanks to Student Council for planning a fun week!

CHS SERVES THE COMMUNITY
Last week was a big week for community service. CHS’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) participated in the Chandler Care Center Toy Drive by making ornaments with children from the Chandler community. Additionally, Academic Decathlon served at Feed My Starving Children. Softball volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and is hosting a “Christmas on Upland” fundraiser this Saturday. CHS is so proud of the great work our students do for the community!
CHOIR CONCERT
Last Monday’s Choir Concert was a terrific way to celebrate the holidays! Chandler High’s choirs entertained the large CCA crowd with a number of festive songs and creative choreography. Well done!
WINTER SHOWCASE
CHS Theatre presented its Winter Showcase last week. Theatre I and III students performed karaoke and monologues, and APAC/Company Theatre performed their Arizona State Thespian (ITS) Festival pieces, which all received superior and excellent ratings. Great work, Wolves!
CHANDLER HIGH SOFTBALL- ‘CHRISTMAS ON UPLAND”
The Chandler High Softball Booster Club is hosting a fundraiser this Saturday, December 23rd. Stop by this well-known neighborhood to see some extravagant holiday lights, eat some treats, and support the Chandler High Softball team. Walk the streets to see the lights, or take advantage of the horse-carriage for rides down the street. The neighborhood is off Warner Road – between the 101 freeway and Dobson Road.
#THINKFIRST
As part of CHS’s drug prevention program, students were given the opportunity to answer questions and spin for cool prizes such as t-shirts, tote bags, notebooks, etc.
15 DAYS TO FINAL EXAM SUCCESS
Final exams are coming! Teachers will be giving students review information in class and as homework over the next couple of weeks. In addition to that regular class work, students should follow these tips and dedicate 10 minutes to each tip, per class, per day, and they are bound to set themselves up for success. Yes, that’s an hour extra a day ~ but that extra hour a day can really pay off! Try it … you’ll see!
