From the Director

Dear CDS Community,

We've made it to the last week of the school year and CDS Middle School has come alive with activity and a sense of relief now that final exams are over. The halls of have been filled with singing as students rehearse their Arch Day songs and prepare for the Summer Concert. 8th graders have been busy presenting elements of their Junior Projects and preparing themselves emotionally for graduation.

Last night's Dalton Soiree was an incredibly fun and memorable way to cap off the school year. I was so impressed with the amount of thought and planning our Student Council put into the evening. Student all looked fantastic! We hardy recognized them in their beautiful dresses and formal wear. I want offer a sincere thank you to the the Student Council, teacher facilitators (Mr. Brennan and Mrs. Koetje), and the several teachers who volunteered their time on Friday night to chaperone.

Next week we have many end of year events including the MS Art Exhibition, MS Summer Concert, PBL Showcase and Gallery Walk, Arch Day, and of course Graduation! Please find information about each of these within the Newsletter.

NWEA MAP test Progress Reports will be sent home with students on Wednesday 6/6. These reports will show your child's growth over the entire school year in Math, Language Usage, and Reading.

Please let us know if you have any questions about the final days of the school year.

Have a great weekend!

PBL Showcase & Gallery Walk on 6/5

Students have worked very hard this year in their IBL/PBL classes and they are very excited to present their work on Tuesday 6/5 from 8:15am - 11:50am in the MS wing. All interested parents are encouraged to attend this special event and celebrate our students' effort, inquiry, and reflection.

This year, 8th graders have worked on junior projects. These are independent capstone projects demonstrating their readiness to proceed to high school. The work they've done is centered on the theme of "Wellness."

7th graders progressed through 2 major units that gradually increased student ownership and responsibility. Students developed important skills of the inquiry process: research, communication, critical thinking, integrity and reflection. They concluded the year with an individual project requiring all of these skills. The theme for 7th grade is "Making the World a Better Place."

Yoon Hwang's IBL Project - Sleep Deprivation

"For my IBL Junior Project, I researched sleep deprivation because I realized that a lot of students in CDS Middle school including me are struggling from the lack of sleep. This lack of sleep is also called sleep deprivation.

I thought finding solutions for this issue could help middle school students at CDS at least a little. Before researching about this issue, I sent a survey to the middle school students. The replies made me realize that most students actually sleep much less than what I thought and also not even close to the requirements of the sleep they need.

This can be a serious problem because sleeping is one of the most important courses of your life. Sleeping enough will increase your quality of life by increasing your concentration, decreasing your stresses, etc. I made a website to tell the students how to prevent sleep deprivation and that improving sleeping life should be important to them.
