Principal's Corner
Dear Lake Forest Community High School,
From snowy to cold to snowy cold, it is definitely February in Illinois! We watched our Scouts Cheer at States today, and they were incredible. Congratulations to a dedicated and dynamic group–we are so proud of you!
Course Registration
At the Foundation and APT meetings this week, I talked about the course registration process at LFHS. I have fielded questions about the level of rigor our classes offer, and to be completely honest, the concerns I have fielded have spanned a continuum of “you don’t prepare students” to “you over prepare students.” I have worked with my team this year to ensure that our course recommendation process is even more robust, asking for teachers and departments to consider pre and post requisite learning as well. We have created a homework calculator to help guide decision making as well, so I ask that you work with your student and counselor, review the recommendations; consider the extracurricular activities and familial obligations your student has or needs; and choose courses that provide the best opportunity for your student to remain balanced–in all aspects of school and home life. All of our classes are rigorous and the vast array of choices are so students can select courses that meet their needs where they are most comfortable and ready to be challenged while providing enriching experiences to help them grow and achieve.
Wild Dust
This weekend marks Joe Pulio’s final show, Wild Dust. I am looking forward to seeing it tonight, but it isn’t too late! Tickets are still available for Saturday–and it would be great if we packed the Little Theater. A hearty congratulations to a professional who helped build theater at LFHS–Director Pulio, thank you for being a true Scout and LEADING THE WAY!
Tech Bytes
This past week, I connected with a parent who had questions about the Schoology platform. Our Tech team has a tutorial for parents who are interested in learning more about our Learning Management System–please see below.
Finally, we have Girls Basketball Senior Night and Gymnastics held Sectionals at LFHS–as usual, it is GREAT TO BE A SCOUT!
Wishing you rest and warmth,
Erin

Details on Upcoming Assessments
AP Exam Deadlines
The College Board AP Exams will be administered in school during the weeks of May 1-5 and May 8-12, 2023. To learn more about the benefits and structure of AP Exams visit this College Board link: AP Exams Overview.
AP Exams will be held at Lake Forest High School as shown on this calendar:
2023 College Board AP Exam Schedule
2023 Spanish College Board AP Exam Schedule
Final Deadlines:
Registration & Payment:
March 1st is the final deadline to purchase your AP Exam. Please complete payment through REVTRAK on the LFHS website: https://lakeforest.revtrak.net/ Select AP Exams; choose the exam of your choice on the left side of your screen and that will bring you to the payment page.
Cancellation of Exam & Refunds:
An exam that has been paid for and canceled after 11/6/22 will incur a $40 restocking fee as charged by The College Board.
Partial refunds will not be available after 3/1/23.
If you need to cancel an exam, please contact Mrs. LaVitola so College Board materials can be removed from the students account.
Fee Reduction:
The College Board offers a fee reduction for eligible students with financial need. Please contact Mrs. LaVitola for further details.
Test Accommodations:
Students with an IEP or 504 Plan may be eligible for accommodations on AP Exams. In order to receive accommodations on AP Exams, a student must be approved by the College Board Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD). For students that do not already have accommodations in place, the deadline for applying for accommodations to the College Board is January 18, 2023. Please contact the appropriate administrator for questions and the application process: for IEP Students - Joey Kowalik, Director of Special Education, jkowalik@lfschools.net and for 504 Students - John Maher, Director of Student Services, jmaher@lfschools.net.
If a student is approved for testing accommodations by The College Board and chooses not to use them, a parent must notify Mrs. La Vitola, dlavitola@lfschools.net, by March 1, 2023. Otherwise, students will be placed in the appropriate testing room as indicated on their approved accommodation documents.
Exam Scheduling Conflicts:
Occasionally, a student wants to take two AP Exams scheduled for the same time period. In such cases, the College Board will allow one of the exams to be taken during the late testing period (May 17-May 19) for no additional cost.
If a student is ill and misses an exam, a late exam can be ordered. The College Board will approve late testing for personal conflicts upon review. If the conflict is approved, the College Board charges an additional $40 for each make-up exam.
For both situations, please contact Mrs. La Vitola for scheduling.
Important Deadlines:
August - September 2022: Sign into your College Board account and join your AP Classroom.
September 26 - November 6: Pay for your AP Exam(s) through https://lakeforest.revtrak.net/ap-exams/#/list on the Lake Forest High School website to avoid a $40 late fee.
January 2023: Second semester only course students need to sign into their College Board account and join their appropriate AP Classroom.
January 18, 2023: Deadline to apply and submit ALL paperwork for College Board Accommodations.
March 1, 2023: Deadline to make all changes to AP Registration; order an exam with a $40 late fee; cancel an exam for partial refund.
March 1, 2023: Notify Mrs. La Vitola if you wish to waive approved College Board testing accommodations.
Testing room assignments will be available a few days before the exam. They will be distributed to teachers to share with their class, as well as posted in the Commons by student ID number for students to reference. Students must report to their rooms for the morning exams by 7:45 AM and 12 noon for the afternoon exams. Students who have two exams in one day should plan to pack a lunch to have between exams. Students with Accommodations who have two exams in one day should work with Mrs. La Vitola to opt into late testing for one of the exams.
Students who arrive after the test room has been seated and the reading has begun will not be able to take the exam.
Students should dress in layers and bring:
Student ID
Sharpened No.2 pencils
Black or blue pens
Calculator- freshly charged or with extra batteries for appropriate exams.
Further details will be shared closer to exam dates.

Illinois Science Assessment for Juniors * March 16, 2023
The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) requires all juniors to take the Illinois Science Assessment. The assessment will be administered at Lake Forest High School. The assessment is web-based and is aligned to the Illinois Learning Standards for Science.
LFHS will administer the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) to all juniors on Thursday, March 16, 2023, from 7:45 am to 11:45 am. Students will be expected to arrive at their designated testing site by 7:45 am in order to ensure a prompt 8:00 am start time. This assessment consists of three sections that should take approximately 45 minutes each to complete. This is a web-based assessment, so it is imperative that all juniors bring their school-issued, fully-charged Chromebook/MacBook and charger to school the morning of the assessment. This assessment must be taken on a school issued chromebook.
If your student misses this state-required assessment, a make-up assessment will be scheduled and administered. This could result in a disruption to other classes. Therefore, it is important to participate in the scheduled assessment date on Thursday, March 16, 2023.
Additional details regarding this assessment will be communicated closer to the exam. Room assignments will be posted in the commons the morning of the assessment. While there will be announcements regarding this assessment, please remind your child of the importance of participating in the assessment on Thursday, March 16rd.
For questions or concerns, please contact: Donna La Vitola, LFHS Assessment & Resource Coordinator, dlavitola@lfschools.net * 847-582-7332

What is Schoology?
Lake Forest High School uses Schoology as our learning management system (LMS). An LMS provides course management, mobile learning, and support for system-wide communication regarding teaching and learning. Schoology enables our students, teachers, and parents to engage with learning materials and their school community from the classroom and beyond. Additionally, Schoology benefits all stakeholders as a single, unified digital workflow system. With Schoology, students can digitally submit homework assignments, see daily agendas and learning targets, participate in interactive discussions, receive announcements, take formative assessments, and more.
Within Schoology, you have several options to customize your experience.
Schoology Parent login page: Already registered? Go here to log back in.
Notification Settings: Schoology sends you email notifications for Social, Academic, Group, and School activity that occurs in your account. These notifications pertain to the school, courses, and groups in which you are enrolled (not courses or groups in which your child is enrolled).
Overdue Work Notifictions: The Overdue area on the right side of the homepage displays a list of materials that they did not turn in on time. It appears for students who have at least one item that they did not submit before the posted due date. Overdue materials are listed from most- to least-overdue, with the most-overdue item at the top.
Android or iOS Apps: Quick access to important information and push notifications directly to your device.
Schoology Parent Guide: This is your comprehensive guide! Having a Parent account in Schoology is actually like having two accounts: your personal account, with your own name and information AND your Child Activity view. From here, you can view Schoology from your child’s perspective—see what they see and receive updates about their activity.
Have you not created a Schoology parent/guardian account?
Go to app.schoology.com/register and click Parent
Enter your Parent Access Code. This code was emailed to you in the fall, and if you don’t know the code, email edtechstudio@lfschools.net. This is a 12-digit code in the xxxx-xxxx-xxxx format.
Fill out the form with your information.
Click Register to complete.
When you use a Parent Access Code to create an account, you are automatically associated to your child. To login and view your child(ren)’s courses, visit app.schoology.com/ and use your newly created login credentials.
*Multiple parents and/or guardians can use the same access code to set up individual parent accounts
