Appreciations
We'd like to thank those of you who supplied snack items for our special snack on Wednesday. This, combined with our annual LES parade, made for an exciting and memorable day. We appreciate you!
Study Trip
Remember, we are going to Richmond's Civic Hall on MONDAY for our study trip to The Very Hungry Caterpillar. If you have not reserved a packed lunch with the school cafeteria, then your child will need a packed lunch/drink that day.
Picture Retakes
Don't forget...picture retakes will be on Thursday, November 8th for those students that were absent or for those students who wish to return their previously sent home packet and have their photographs retaken. Please note that this is a date change from the LES school newsletter.
Showdown at Resource Ranch
On Tuesday, students were treated to Showdown at Resource Ranch, an informative presentation about the consumption and conservation of energy. The high-energy performance was sponsored by Duke Energy. They are offering a FREE energy kit to our families. As an added bonus, Duke will award our school money for your participation. Remember, it is FREE and our school has the potential to earn up to $2,500. Even better, Duke will select a lucky family to receive $1,000!!!!!! Click here to request your FREE kit (or fill out the hard copy information that was sent home earlier). You do not have to be a Duke Energy customer to participate.
Science: Solids & Liquids
Our class is beginning a scientific study of solids and liquids. We will observe the properties of many solids and liquids, comparing how solids and liquids are alike and how they are different; organize the results of our inquiries; and communicate both orally and in writing the things we discover. These processes (observing, communicating, comparing, and organizing) are the basic thinking processes students need at this age to develop a scientific understanding of the world around them. During this unit we will be addressing the following Indiana Science Academic Standard:
- "Predict the result of combining solids and liquids in pairs. Mix, observe, gather, record, and discuss evidence of whether the result may have different properties than the original materials."
Frankenstein's Hands
Speaking of investigations with solids, liquids, and gases... We had a lot of fun creating Frankenstein's Hands on Halloween. We did this by pouring three tablespoons of vinegar into an empty glass. Next we added two teaspoons of baking soda into a latex glove, making sure that it all went down into the fingers. After that, we placed the glove on to the top of the glass. Then once the glove was attached, we shook all of the baking soda down into the glass which contained the vinegar. And just like magic, when the baking soda and vinegar mixed, the hand came to life. This experiment literally only took minutes and the students thought it was the coolest thing. Be sure to check out some of the awesome pictures below. Why not try it at home for your child's added enjoyment?
