WHAT'S NEW? (March 18th, 2016)

Hi Families,
This week was Safety Week at Greenbriar. We had a lock down drill and a severe weather drill. We will be having a Fire Drill soon.

We were busy celebrating St. Patrick's Day on Thursday by making a leprechaun, wearing green, listening to Irish music, and dancing a jig during math.

Mrs. Able sent the PARCC testing schedule via the lit serv. We will be starting these tests on the Monday that we return from Spring Break. In case you did not check that yet, it is as follows:
Monday, April 4th: 1:45-3:00
Tuesday, April 5th: 10:10-11:50 and 1:45-3:00
Wednesday, April 6th: 10:10-11:50 and 1:45-3:00
Thursday, April 7th: 10:10-11:50 and 1:45-3:00

Please note that the state requires each student to take all of the tests. If your child is absent for any reason, s/he will need to make up the test upon return.

Since we do not have school next Friday (Good Friday), we will NOT be introducing new Spelling and Vocabulary words.

Read below to see what else has been going on in Room 201.

Enjoy your weekend,
Mrs. Sanchez and Mrs. Mirza

P.S. Thanks to the parents who sent in glue sticks with your child. Keep them coming! :)

This week in Math, the students continued to learn about graphing and coordinates. They went a bit above and beyond the 5th grade curriculum and learned about the four quadrants of a grid and negative numbers. They created a Kermit picture by plotting the correct coordinates. They watched Khan Academy to learn about line plots and visited another website to practice reading and interpreting the line plots.

We postponed our Chapter 11 test and it will now be given this Monday. Your child can practice the math vocabulary words by visiting Quizlet. (link below).

Writer's Workshop

This week in Writer's Workshop, the students completed their persuasive essays and shared their pieces with the class. Once again, they were given time to free-write to get their creative minds working!

Reader's Workshop

We continued our Book Clubs this week and the students are getting closer to finishing their novels. All of the groups participated in a "fish bowl" activity where they shared their thoughts about the book, asked and answered questions, and used respectful/appropriate phrases to keep the conversation going. Be sure to ask your child about his/her book.

The NEW Rebecca Caudill Award for 2017 list has been posted! Take a look at the link below.

This week in Science, the students presented their Space R.A.F.T Project. They were "out of this world"! It was great to see the amount of time and effort put into this project. The students were very creative and everyone enjoyed watching each others' presentation.
