infrared waves

by Elijah Weston

What are Infrared waves?

infrared radiation s a type of electromagnetic , as are radio, ultraviolet radiation, X-rays and microwaves.(IR) light is the part of the EM spectrum that people encounter most in everyday life, although much of it goes unnoticed. It is invisible to human eyes, but people can feel it as heat.

how are they created

Even objects that we think of as being very cold, such as an ice cube, emit infrared. When an object is not quite hot enough to radiate visible light, it will emit most of its energy in the infrared For example, hot charcoal may not give off light but it does emit infrared radiation which we feel as heat.

what are some of the properties of infrared waves

Within the electromagnetic spectrum, the wavelength of infrared is shorter than microwaves and longer than the color red in visible light

fun facts

did you know that just changing the channel or turning up the volume on your TV is a great example of infrared waves. the TV is able to detect the waves that the remote emits.

what could it do to your health

with near infrared being the closest in wavelength to visible light, and “far infrared” closer to the microwave region. Near infrared waves are short and not hot — in fact you cannot even feel them — which is what makes them particularly dangerous to susceptible tissues, such as skin and eyes
