From the Desk of the Principal
Hello families of Trix Academy,
As we all know, attendance is an important part of the learning process. Scholars first begin their day with an 8:30am check-in with the teacher where they develop social skills as well as complete morning work to get them ready for learning. Logging into Blackboard is critical for scholars to log into Blackboard at 8:30am and remain logged in for each subject of the day. It is also important for scholars to remain logged in at the designated times. If scholars log into the sessions after instruction has already started or leave the session early, he or she will miss valuable information. This will cause your son or daughter to fall behind in the learning process. Please ensure your child(ren) are logged into Blackboard daily to receive instruction. For scholars to count as present for the day, scholars must be logged in for the school day and not just a shortened portion of the day. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Coleman at (313) 426-1020 or d.coleman@mecc-academies.org.
Sincerely,
Detra Coleman, Ed.S.

October's Virtue - Harmony
During the month of October, Trix scholars will focus on one virtue to gain a better and deeper understanding. The virtue for October is Harmony. Harmony means to be in accord or agreement, as in feeling or opinion. When our scholars demonstrates harmony they will show qualities of unity, order and balance. They will maintain positive relationships and social interactions throughout the school day. Please ask your child how he/she has demonstrated harmony while engaged in the learning process.

Virtual Learning Tips
Measuring virtual learning is critical. One way to measure is based on the level of engagement while online. Below are a few areas to focus on to determine lesson engagement.
- Discuss teaching goals: Have a one-on-one with the instructor a few times throughout the curriculum and gauge where your child is compared to the rest of the students.
- Talk to your child: Encourage open communication and ask your child how they’re feeling about the lessons, and their performance, frequently.
- Monitor grades: Note any significant drops or changes in grades. Identify the problem when applicable, and create a plan of action necessary.
- Notice social shifts: If your child is withdrawn, or has a lack of interest for things that were normally of interest, have a conversation first, and bring in a counselor if necessary.

Third Grade Reading Law
Being a good reader is critical if a student is going to be successful in school. In order for students to be college and career ready, it is important that they have strong literacy skills. In 2016, the Michigan Legislature passed House Bill No. 4822 to ensure that children who exit Third Grade are reading at grade level.
In accordance with this law, and as a means of better informing classroom instruction, we will complete assessments in Kindergarten through Third Grade. These assessments will identify students who need intensive reading instruction and will also provide useful information to help teachers tailor instruction to meet individual student needs. Students will be assessed in reading at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year. The law also requires districts to provide written communication with parents of Kindergarten through Third Grade students who are not meeting proficiency targets. These notifications and a reading plan were given and discussed at Parent-Teacher Conferences during the first parent teacher conference. It is critical for everyone to be on the same page regarding Michigan’s reading law. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or the principal.
