Principal's Letter
Dear West TV Families,
Media Use
The fall weather is certainly here and students are spending more time indoors. Often that likely means more screen time. The technology we live with and the learning that takes place on a screen is truly remarkable, but there should be limits. The question I am sure many of us struggle with is, "How much is it?" and "What are the positive and negative impacts of gaming, smart phones, and social media?" Although I don't have the answer, I have found a balance of screen time, active time, and family time with my own children. Supervising their use and access to different types of content has been a priority.
Last year the American Academy of Pediatrics announced recommendations for children's use of media. Read this article to help you determine the rules and guidlines for the use of media in your family.
Community Partnership Team Update
This group promotes and assists with developing collaborative, school-based community outreach, volunteer activities among parents, non-parents, business, faith communities, and other community organizations. Our community partnership team has met twice and established our goals for the year. We will create new partnerships, strengthen current partnerships, share accomplishments through multiple venues, and support PYP policy and implementation work.
This year we have helped to facilitate or develop volunteers from Catlin Gable, a book club run by SHS students and a budding connection with the Oregon College of Arts and Crafts.
Enjoy your weekend.
Sincerely,
Kalay McNamee

School Breakfast
School Breakfast - Good for Kids and Good for Parents!
For parents with busy schedules, it can be hard to make sure that kids are eating a healthy breakfast before they come to school in the morning.
Sometimes children aren’t hungry right after waking up, or it’s hard to find food they like to eat that is also healthy. Also, some kids refuse breakfast at home but are hungry when they arrive at school. Fortunately, we have a great breakfast program for all students, and it’s available at school every day in our cafeteria.
If morning meals are difficult for your family, let the School Breakfast Program help you out!
Pre-K Cadre
Did you know that we are in the process of adding a new grade in our Beaverton elementary schools? That’s right… we are in the process of planning for a seamless, integrated Pre-K in multiple elementary schools next school year. Are you interested in being part of this exciting movement? If so, we want you to know that we will be starting a Pre-K-3rd grade Cadre soon. Applications for this Cadre will be sent out in the Weekly Bulletin, ELA Memo, and by email on October 6th. Please look for the application and consider partnering with BSD staff, Early Learning partners across the State, and business leaders as we develop a comprehensive, integrated Pre-K in Beaverton. Kudos to Megan Irwin, our Administrator for Early Learning, and a host of other individuals and departments for their support in this critical endeavor! Applications can be found HERE and are due Friday 10/27.
