Friday FPC Incentive
Parents and Students need to be aware of the following things in order to participate in our weekly incentive:
- Students need to have their missing/current work turned in by each Thursday by 11:59pm.
- Teachers will be updating grades no later than Friday by 7:30am.
- If a student turns in an assignment during the school day on Friday, teachers are unable to grade it before FPC time and students are unable to participate in the incentive.
- If it is a mistake (teachers do make mistakes), students are responsible to show their FPC teacher that the assignment is not marked missing in their Student Portal.
- Our last incentive day will be Friday, May 21st.
STUCO Dodgeball Tourney
Congrats to our 6th Grade Students who received this week's Character Strong Trait!
Information from the 6th Grade Team
ELA
This week, we are starting to finish up our Close Reading Unit. They used these skills to close read their own book focusing on the standards they chose for their Social Justice Reading Passion Project. I am so impressed with what students came up with and their creativity! Students who have not turned in their project need to do so as soon as possible to receive a grade for this assessment otherwise it will be marked as missing!
Next week, we will be doing our last practice over the close reading steps before the quiz on Thursday, May 20th! Students will be looking at a poem and going through the close reading steps on their own to try to determine meaning by writing a RAP paragraph.
We will also be taking an assessment over our very last Mentor Sentence! We will be doing our normal routine of writing the sentence down and labeling parts of speech on Monday, May 17th, figuring out the comma rule and figurative language type on Tuesday, May 18th, and then taking final answers on Thursday, May 20th for an assessment grade. There is study materials as well as our answers for past Mentor Sentences posted on Google Classroom for students to review starting today.
If your student will not be at school these days for assessments/quizzes, please let me know so I can schedule the test sometime next week before Thursday/Friday.
Have a good weekend!
Science
This week in science we have been finishing up our second portion of our space unit. We took our final test today (Friday, May 14th). The last eight days of school will be spent designing a "trip" to Mars. The mission will include the following goals:
1. Categorize current NASA mission goals to Mars
2. Collaborate with a team to establish goals for the mission
3. Design a mission that meets the requirements for balancing a budget, mass, and power, achieves significant science return, and makes it safely to the planet
4. Identify any engineering constraints that limited the capability of your mission
Math
Students finished strong this week with our assessment over Ratios and Rates. Students were given back these tests and corrections if the score was below a 70%. They are due on Monday, 05/17. Remember if a student scores over 70% it is their choice to do corrections for a better grade, but the corrections are still due Monday.
Students were also introduced this week to our last mini-unit over converting fractions, decimals, and percents. They are doing really well while learning the new concepts of the percent and how to work with them. We will continue with our mini-unit next week with a couple of short in-class projects on the conversion process. Remember our final assessment grade will be on Monday. May 24. If your student will not be at school that day, please let me know so I can schedule the test at the end of next week for them.
Have a wonderful weekend!!
Social Studies
This week in Social Studies! We are wrapping our section over European African Colonization and next week will begin our section over Europe. Students have been doing a great job working on a visual study guide on JamBoard for the quiz that they took on Friday.
Next week, we will be looking at European countries and cultures. We are going to be teaming up with the 8th grade Social Studies teacher, Mrs. Marshall, to put together a "time capsule" information worksheet for the sixth grade team to open up and review in their 8th grade year. It's hard to believe that next week is the last full week of school!
Specials
P.E.
This week we introduced our 2021 Barry School Olympics and each group picked a country that they will represent in a variety of sports and skills events. The students will compete in these events over the next few weeks and we will finish the unit with a celebration and medal ceremony.
Band
6th Grade Band students have been working very hard to prepare for our concert. We cannot wait to perform for you on Wednesday, May 19th! Please read through the following information regarding our concert.
Concert Information
Date: Wednesday, May 19th
Location: Barry School Gymnasium
Student Attire: Please dress nicely. This could mean a dress, skirt, or slacks/khakis and a nice top, polo, or button down shirt. Please no shorts.
Additional information: 6th Grade and 7th/8th Grades will have their own separate concert. This is to ensure that as many family members can come to each performance as possible. Please look for your student’s band information below:
6th Grade Band:
- Arrive at Barry School - 5:40 pm
- Perform - 6:00 pm
Seats in the gym will be marked and that will guide where families can sit. We ask that families properly distance from other families. Family members from the same household are welcome to sit grouped together.
Our concert will last approximately 30 minutes. At the conclusion of the concert, please exit the gym and meet your student in the commons area of the building. As a reminder, concerts are an important part of your student’s grade in Band. Each student plays an integral part in our performance, and without them our band is incomplete. If you have concerns about your student’s attendance at this event, please reach out to me.
