Banned Books Week - Oct. 1st -7th
We are so happy to be celebrating Banned Books Week for the 1st time at Highlander Charter School in Providence.
What is Banned Books Week? - Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. It was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. Banned Books Week highlights the value of free and open access to information and brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and express ideas. ALA is one of the founders of Banned Books Week and a member of the Banned Books Week Coalition, an international alliance of diverse organizations joined by a commitment to raise awareness about intellectual freedom issues and to celebrating and defending the right to read during Banned Books Week and beyond.
The theme for Banned Books Week 2023 is "Let Freedom Read." When we ban books, we're closing off readers to people, places, and perspectives. But when we stand up for stories, we unleash the power that lies inside every book. We liberate the array of voices that need to be heard and the scenes that need to be seen. Let freedom read!
There are many ways to participate here a few:
-Students, families and staff are invited to create a sign, banner with a slogan and or quote about Banned Books. Here some ideas - Freedom to Read, Reading is a human right, Democracies do not ban books, Stop censoring what we can read, I have the right to read books about diversity, Diverse students deserve diverse books, Do not ban books - Ban censorship
Or quotes like from Isaac Asimov quote: “Any book worth banning is a book worth reading.”
-Create a poster or design a new cover for a banned book that you have read.
Community Building Field Trip
For many years one of Highlander’s signature trips was Mountain Day. Due to some events that have happened in the last few years we had to put a pause on this amazing event.
And now, we a bringing it back during the week of Oct. 10-13th. PreK - 2nd grade will visit the beautiful Neutaconkanut and 3rd-6th will visit Blue HillsThe main goal of this event is to Build Community. There is a great hill that we climb and explore.
Read to Succeed Award Ceremony for 3rd -8th grade- October 26th
This year we will be celebrating 15th years of partnership with the Read to Succeed Program. At the event we will recognize all the students that successfully completed the program this past summer.

We don't need to know the details, please send a message to Ms.Tatiana or your child principal and just say "Handle with Care", you don't need to share details. Your child will not be told anything unless you want us to say something. This alert us to make sure your child has space, time and extra love and support throughout the day.

What is Development all About Anyway?
Thanks to the generosity of our community, Highlander is able to provide many programs and opportunities that would not otherwise be possible. Individual donors like you, corporations and other businesses provide funds every year to help our students have access to high quality experiences and a great learning environment.
Development is about building relationships with our community so that we are able to help our donors achieve their dreams. What does that mean? If the donor believes that education, or music, or theater is important, they might want to donate to Highlander to help build these programs for our students. It’s sort of a matching game if you will. It is matching what the donor wants and loves with the needs of our school. It sometimes happens quickly, but most often it is a process as it is in any relationship.
How can you help?
We are always happy to meet new friends who would like to learn more about Highlander or who already have heard about us and want to get involved. This could be a business, a corporation or an individual. If you want to learn more, just email Jeanne our Director of Development and Community Relations at jdagostino@hc.school
