Macleans Primary School Newsletter
Wednesday 29 November 2023
Macleans Primary School Community
Hi Everyone
We do hope all of your end of the year plans are coming together well and arrangements for time spent on holiday, with family and friends are all falling into place. The next newsletter is on Wednesday 13 December, the second last day of school, so if you have any end of year achievements from your children to share with the community please let me know.
I really enjoyed catching-up with parents at the 'End of Year Parent Helpers Morning Tea' this morning. I am sure we all enjoyed the delicious food. All of the parent and community support this year is so appreciated - THANKS! All of the help and support from parents is a great example of our home-school partnership. We look forward to a continued strong and meaningful home-school partnership in 2024.
2023 Yearbooks are on sale, so please order one while you can as we have a limited amount through the print run. The Yearbooks will be distributed in the last week of school, giving the children enough time to get signatures and comments from their friends and teachers. See more details on how to order the yearbook below.
I have had a couple of questions about class placement next year and when we let our parents and children know. For the past couple of years we have let you and your child know of their new class a few days before the first day of school. This will happen again this year. Mid-late afternoon on Friday 26 January an email will be sent from your child's class teacher to you welcoming your child to their new 2024 class so that on Wednesday 31 January, day 1 of the 2024 school year, children will know to line up on the pavement by the field (weather permitting) in their new classes. An exception to this is if your child is in a composite class for 2024 as Macleans Primary has two composite classes in 2024 - a Y2/Y3 and a Y4/Y5. We will let you know ahead of time if your child is in a composite class.
We also look forward to seeing many parents at the 2023 End of Year Prize-Givings in the school hall. Times are below. You will have been, or will be contacted soon, to let you know if your child is receiving an award.
Prize Givings Thursday 7 December (times of finish are approximates)
Year 1: 9.15 to 10.15am Year 2 & Year 3: 11.45 - 12.45pm
Prize Givings Friday 8 December (times of finish are approximates)
Year 4 & Year 5: 9.15 to 10.15am Year 6: 11.45 - 12.45pm
I have also included the list of teachers who are leaving Macleans Primary this year and the teachers who are joining us in 2024. We don't particularly enjoy farewelling teachers (and all those leaving this year will be missed!), but we do get excited to welcome new teachers who we know will bring with them great enthusiasm to the classroom and a terrific extra-curricula skill set that will benefit the children and community. The new teachers we welcome fit our vision and philosophy of a child-centred learning approach that is supported by the Macleans values within a meaningful home-school partnership in a highly collaborative and supportive teaching culture - mahi tahi!
The final newsletter of the year will be on Wednesday 13 December. A few 2023 items will be wrapped up, including a the school overview, organisation and classrooms and teachers for 2024. Next years school structure and operational funding investment in teacher aides and a SENCO is designed to continue to grow and develop our school vision of the Macleans Learner at the heart, with Teacher Aides in more classes and a full-time SENCO working with children, parents and teachers.
Your child's end of the year report (interim if they have been at school less than 6 weeks) will be sent home on Monday 11 December. Please get in contact with your child's teacher should you have any questions/concerns following the report. Please remember that the EoY Report is complemented by the Learning Pathways that has been shared with you a couple of times earlier this year. I will be sending home a notice next week which includes an update on the EoY Report, specifically 'how to read' the report.
Thanks to everyone who completed the Macleans Primary Annual Survey. The results are highly supportive and confirming of our teaching and learning approach. Details of the survey will be published in the next newsletter.
Please, please please...return any library books that your child may have in the bottom of their bag, under beds, in cupboards, etc.
On a final note, don't forget the teacher Only Day is this Friday, 1 December. All the teachers involved are looking forward to a full day of NZ Curriculum development and planning for 2024.
Please enjoy this newsletter and please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, ideas and thoughts.
Regards & Nga Mihi

Farewell and Bon Voyage
We farewell a number of teachers this year who are moving overseas or outside of Auckland. We also say good bye to two teachers who are taking up new leadership positions at Pakuranga Heights - Shirley Leong and Melanie Harper. Melanie has taught for 10 years at Macleans Primary School. She has been a team leader and managed many different aspects of the Year 4 to Year 6 Team. Over the years Melanie has made many contributions to the children and parents at Macleans Primary; she has also served on the Board of Trustees as Staff Rep. and been involved in leading, managing and supporting many different extra-curricula activities, from camps to student leaders. Shirley joined Macleans Primary as a beginning teacher 9 years ago in the junior team. During that time, Shirley has taught year 2 and year 3 and has led the school choir and music programmes. Most recently, Shirley has had team leader and curriculum leader roles. We wish Melanie and Shirley well, knowing that all the opportunities that they have had at Macleans Primary has set them up well for success in their new leadership positions. Rebecca Skeen has been at Macleans Primary School since 2013, teaching from year 2 to year 4. Rebecca has been a great classroom teacher as well as leading many extra-curricula programmes, including science and enviro. programmes. Rebecca has been traveling the Maraetai Road daily with her son Luke but will no longer have to as she has a new position 5 minutes from her home at Beachlands School. Rebecca has commented that she will miss 'Macleans, but not the drive!' All the best, Rebecca!

Hauora/Health & Well-Being: A Healthy Diet
Healthy eating is essential for your child's good health, growth and development. Healthy eating in childhood means they will have less chance of developing chronic diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and some cancers. It will also mean they feel better and enjoy life more. To stay healthy and maintain a healthy weight, children need to be physically active and eat the right amount of nutrients to balance the energy they use. The New Zealand dietary guidelines recommend children should enjoy a wide variety of foods from these 5 food groups:
- fruit
- vegetables, legumes and beans
- grain (cereal) foods, including breads, rice, pasta and noodles, mostly wholegrain or high cereal fibre types
- lean meat, fish, poultry and/or alternatives
- milks, yoghurts, cheeses or alternatives — children under 2 should have full-fat milk, but older children and adolescents should choose mostly reduced-fat varieties

Cubism is an early 20th-century style and movement in art, especially painting, in which perspective with a single viewpoint was abandoned and use was made of simple geometric shapes, interlocking planes, and, later, collage.
