Mustang Round-Up
2019-20 Cheyenne Middle School Newsletter - November
From the Principal
Dear Mustang Families,
Is it November already? I am not ready to lose our daylight hours yet. I love Autumn, the smells, changing colors, and cozy times with family. There is nothing like a warm pumpkin muffin with a cream cheese center or the smell of a roast cooking all day. As a parent of a middle school student, I see my son becoming more practiced at his teacher's expectations and classroom practices. With encouragement and reminders, he is checking his own grades on his portal account and lets us know when he needs to retake or get extra help. Students need us to engage them about their grades and school activities. We encourage you to continue to inquire about their progress in school and the importance of talking with the teachers.
The month of November is full of opportunities and important celebrations for our school. The fall sports season is coming to an end and our winter sports season begins. Our annual Veterans Day Program will be held on Monday, November 11th. 8th-grade families should have received information regarding this program.
We will continue to work together to provide your child with the best educational experience. On behalf of our staff, we hope you have a great Thanksgiving holiday. I am very thankful for the opportunity to work with supportive families, incredibly talented children, and the dedicated and creative staff at Cheyenne Middle School.

From the PTO
We had a very successful 6th grade Social on Thursday, November 7th. This event wouldn't have been so much fun without our families' support. Thank you so much for all the parent volunteers and donations.
The weather is getting colder and are you wishing you would have bought that Cheyenne Spirit Wear Sweatshirt? Good News! The PTO has set up another opportunity to buy the long-sleeve white shirt or blue sweatshirt. Please click on the link below and make your choice. Don’t wait too long as orders will close THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7TH.

Our school will observe Veteran’s Day on Monday, November 11th. Each year, Cheyenne’s eighth grade students honor this day with an assembly. The PTO will provide a luncheon in the library for the veterans to enjoy while they wait for the assembly. Last year was an overwhelming success, pointing out the true meaning of Veteran’s Day to our students.
We need your help to provide this luncheon. Last year we served around 130 veterans and their guests. Donations are required to make this wonderful luncheon possible. Please click on the link below to help.

October Student of the Month
Student ID Badges
EVERY student has been issued a Student ID Badge. Per the new District Policy, this MUST be worn EVERY day with the district-issued lanyard and the picture must face out. No personal lanyards or bling, pins, etc. can be added.
If your student does not have their badge they will need to print a temporary badge for the day as they enter the gym. It is VERY important that the student remember their badge each and every day. A temporary badge should only be needed on a rare occasion not for everyday use. If your student has lost their badge please have them come into the office with $5 to have a replacement badge made. After the third temporary badge students will serve lunch detention and on the 5th time alternative in-school placement for the day.
Please continue to remind your child to put their badge in the same spot every day so that they have it with them every day. AS they walk out the door or get into the car ask them these two things… Do you have your ID? Is your Chromebook charged?

District Policy regarding Personal Devices
We expect personal devices to be off and out of sight for the duration of the school day. Chromebooks have eliminated the need for supplementing with personal devices. In remaining consistent with our middle school practice, devices will be allowed before the first school bell at 7:40 and after the last bell at 2:40. We recognize that personal devices are part of the everyday world that we live in as well as our future, and know the incredible capability that today’s technology brings to our life. For young adolescents, it also presents many challenges. Recent research is now showing that middle school-aged students are spending an average of 4.5 hours a day on their personal devices. That number increases to 8 hours a day by the high school years. As educators and parents we see how many of our kids are immersed on social media platforms, gaming, mass(sometimes hidden) communications and other varieties of content consumption. For a great many students this creates social-emotional and/or academic challenges during school, in addition to the challenges from an instructional point of view. We are seeking to increase classroom engagement and reduce outside distractions, and we appreciate your support in this transition. If you need to get an urgent message to your child, we will be happy to help in that communication from the office.
