Principal's Weekly Update

RAISE Goal: to include new people in games and activities

Te reo phrase of the week: huri mai (turn this way)

Kia ora,

Our annual athletics afternoon was the clear highlight of this week, the skills, talent, and effort that were on display were outstanding. The teachers did a great job of providing engaging activities for our students and encouraging them to achieve their best. We are thoroughly looking forward to the Kaponga Athletics event next Thursday. Can you please return the permission slip ASAP so we can have definite numbers on which students will need transport on the day. Can I please ask our parents/caregivers to remember that this is a school event. Therefore your child/ren need to be sitting with the school at all times. The playground is out of bounds to all of our students. We appreciate your support with this as it makes things extremely hard when we have to try and find students for events who are not sitting with the school.

Whanau Learning Conferences

Yesterday we sent out a notice with all of the details for our upcoming whanau learning conferences. These conferences are very much about meeting the teacher, goal setting, and discussing how your child has settled in. We will hold further learning conferences next term which will be accompanied by a written report and progress update. If you missed the notice, please find it here: https://www.smore.com/kfmy0

Room 1

The students in Room 1 have all been signed up to code.org and are currently working their way through Module One. Understanding computers and learning the basics of coding helps children to develop an appreciation of how things work. It also teaches them how software engineers use math in order to solve problems in a logical and creative way. They can access this account from home and work away on their projects in addition to their weekly homework tasks.

Room 2

We had a fantastic time at school athletics on Wednesday. The weather was beautiful and everyone put in their best effort. We are looking forward to Kaponga Athletics next week.

This week in class we have been focussed on mastering our reading activities and how to complete them in our books. We continue to practice our basic facts with Sharyn and improve on our weekly test.

Room 3

Week 4 has been a great week for us here in Room 3. We have loved perfecting our discus, shot put and high jump this week, and everyone performed so well on Athletics Day! We will continue to practice some of these skills leading up to the Kaponga Athletics. In class we have been writing our pepeha and have begun learning how to pronounce it correctly.

Room 4

This week Room 4 worked hard practising sprints and relays on the back field. They wrote fantastic short stories using great describing words about racing each other too. School Athletics Day on Wednesday was so much fun! It was great to see parents able to come along and support the children. We can’t wait to race next week at Kaponga!

Room 5

We have had yet another fantastic week in Room 5! From starting our phonics program to athletics day it has been full of fun! We were even lucky enough to have someone come in to teach us some athletics skills such as jumping and skipping! We loved it! Here are a few pictures of the fun we had!

Room 6

We have had a great week in Room 6. A big highlight was training for high jump with the seniors ready for Athletics Day. It was exciting to run fast and jump over the bar with lots of cheering and support offered. We were well prepared for the big day!

We had a great afternoon on Wednesday with the rest of the school and really enjoyed all the activities we tried. Everyone was tired but happy at the end.

Here are some stories about high jump.

‘Today I did the high jump and I got puffed. I jumped over the bar.’ Keely

‘I did the high jump. I ran so fast.’ Nate

‘Today I did the high jump. I knocked the bar down.’ Harvey

Today I did the high jump. I ran so fast and I jumped high.’ Braxton

Netball 2021

If your child would like to play netball for Matapu School on Saturdays in Hawera, commencing the week starting 3rd May 2021. You will need to click on the link below and fill out the form individually for each child. Forms need to be completed by Friday the 12th of March 2021.
