What types of activities are done on the job?

Assesses dancers' abilities and advises on correct dance techniques.

Auditions performers for one or more dance parts in a production.

Chooses music, sound effects, or spoken narrative to accompany a dance.

Designs original dance routines for individuals, dance companies, musical theatre, opera, fashion shows, film, television productions and special events.

Designs sets, lighting, costumes, and other artistic elements of productions, in collaboration with cast members.

Directs and stages dance presentations for various forms of entertainment.

Manages dance schools, or assists in their management.

Studies storylines and musical scores to determine how to translate ideas and moods into dance movements.

What are the working conditions and physical demands?

You would often handle loads up to 10 lbs., sometimes up to 20 lbs. You might do a lot of walking or standing, or you might sit but use your arms and legs to control machines, equipment or tools.
